Connecticut Paranormal Encounters and Research or CPEAR, have been investigating hauntings since 2008. They have investigated over forty five haunted locations. Based out of Southington Connecticut, they have gone as far as Pennsylvania to conduct their investigations. Their team consists of thirteen members; all of which have different duties in the group.

CPEAR was founded and is directed by Mike Mafera and his fiancee Carrie Kerns. Their technical manager Chuck Feltman handles all of electronic equipment CPEAR brings on it’s cases. Ray Mafera, Mike’s father, is another one CPEAR’s investigators. He has been investigating the paranormal with his son since 1997. Alec Arbour handles managing cases, research and investigating. Jay Peed, Tyler Matthews, Dan Folcick, Ed Harris and Anne Marie all work as investigators with duties such as taking pictures and video.

CPEAR uses a variety of equipment on their investigations.

  • Digital and Film Cameras: Evidence often shows up in pictures. CPEAR have caught many mists and streaks of lights on their cameras.
  • Electro Magnetic Field Readers: The energy of ghosts is said to disrupt magnetic fields.
  • Laser Thermometers: Spirits are said to draw energy from the air, therefore many haunted locations have "cold spots". These thermometers can measure temperatures in specific spots.
  • Video Cameras: CPEAR has caught various pieces of evidence on video, such as lights turning on and off.
  • Voice Recorders: Investigators capture E.V.P or electronic voice phenomenon (disembodied voices) on these recorders. They often catch what the human ear is incapable of hearing.
  • Ovilus Device: Also called a "ghost box", captures disembodied voices as well. CPEAR members have heard their names called when using the device.
  • K2 Meter: A specialized type of electro magnetic field reader, the group uses it to communicate with ghosts and ask them questions. The group says they have had the most luck with this device.

CPEAR has an excellent reputation and are most concerned with assisting their clients. They never charge for their services. The group is extremely trustworthy and have even been asked to stay in a client's house over night while they slept elsewhere. CPEAR is very professional in how they present  evidence to their clients. It is reviewed for two weeks and each client receives a DVD of evidence caught at their house hold. They are then presented with the DVD at a post investigative meeting.

Their goal with all cases is to give the client answers and peace of mind. The group has taught many lectures and has been featured in a large number of Connecticut newspapers. They were filmed in March of 2009 by Lions Gate Films for a part in the special features section of "A Haunting in Connecticut" DVD and also on an A and E television show called "Psychic Kids".
