Ghosts of Deep River part 1

The town of Deep River’s public library has been creating quite the buzz with ghost hunters lately. It has been featured on local Connecticut news and printed about in the Hartford Courant. I plan on publishing a story next week about the library.

I found out however, from two local paranormal investigation groups, The Connecticut Ghost Seekers and Above the Realm Paranormal that the town hall is also haunted. The building was constructed in 1893 and includes an auditorium on the third floor. The building also housed the town’s jail and morgue in the basement, the cells can still be seen today.

In the winter of 1899 a bank robbery took place at the Deep River Savings Bank. The robber was shot to death by the bank’s night watch man and the would be thief’s body was taken to the basement morgue. The man’s body sat in the morgue for eight days but he was never identified.

He was buried with only the word “unknown” on his tombstone. Each year, on the anniversary of his death, a woman dressed in all black would come and stand beside the grave. Could this nameless man be the one haunting the town hall?

There have been several different reports of paranormal activity in the town hall. An employee heard a disembodied whisper in his ear while shutting off equipment one night. Another staff member shutting off equipment has heard footsteps walking next to him while alone in the auditorium. The elevator has been known to come up to the auditorium on it’s own as well.

Both paranormal investigation groups witnessed this activity while at the town hall. Bob from The Connecticut Ghost Seekers spoke with an elevator repair company and they could find no logical explanation for the malfunctioning elevator. A shadow has been seen walking in front of the exit sign and this was witnessed by one the ghost hunters as well.

When both groups went to investigate the basement many pieces of their electronic equipment started to malfunction. This is common in places with paranormal activity, battery drain is thought to be caused by a spirit trying to manifest itself. The Ghost Seekers did capture some decent E.V.Ps (electronic voice phenomenon) you can listen to them on their website as well as view pictures from the trip.

Great article. I'm currently investigating cemeteries and ghost stories in the La Porte Bay Area (Galveston Bay). Also, my cousin's house on Sylvan Beach is haunted.
