Luna and Dumbledore?

Evanna as Luna

One of the most interesting things about watching the Harry Potter actors grow over the past 10 years, is seeing them turn from shy and nervous creatures to comfortable, funny media darlings. That is certainly true of Evanna Lynch, who was plucked from a tiny town on the eastern coast of Ireland to play the role of Luna Lovegood. Today, in an interview in Irish Central (as reported by Harry Potter site Leaky Cauldron), Lynch discusses the idea of a Luna/Dumbledore "ship," or, "relationship."

“The fans create ideal pair ups based on the books. There are some really crazy ones. I don’t know if I should say. But some people think Luna and Professor Dumbledore would make a great pair in another universe. I mean obviously he’s far too old for her, but their personalities completely match. They’re calm and accepting and quirky and I think they’re both really creative. I’d say they’d be fun together.”

Make sure to read the whole interview for a charming and amusing commentary. Meanwhle, what do you think? Luna and Dumbledore: suited or not? (Assuming, of course, they were closer to each other in age and one of them was not gay. :)

I would agree with Evanna. Excluding the fact that Dumbledore is way to old for her, I think they would be great together. Both are very eccentric and perceptive, and I would love some of the theories they would come up with!

I laughed so hard when I read that, but I could actually see Luna and Dumbledore getting along really well in a far away parallel universe. They are so similar in a lot of ways. But I have a feeling they would both just want to stay platonic friends in the long run.

That is just weird. There is the whole age issue, which isn't the biggest deal, but come on. Dumbledore is dead, we all know that, and he is gay, although ships have never really cared about sexuality. I just think it is sick despite all of those other factors.

Hmm.. I don't think that is a good ship. Maybe if they were the same age, but I generally do not ship adults with students.
Their personalities do match, they are both open minded, but it is also said that opposites attract each other, so does that mean that Luna and Dumbledore are totally wrong for each other?

I'm not really sure. I can see why people would ship them, cause their personalities have some similarities, but overall I do not think they would be perfect for each other.

And yes, Dumbledore is gay, so that would be a problem too..

I agree with Evanna, they would be fun together. A lot of personality parallels there. And they do say opposites attract but they also say like attracts like. It goes both ways. So yeah, despite Dumbledore being gay, dead, and quite elderly, I could see it.

Well, I see what you mean by age differences. But, Dumbledore is gay. We mush accept that even if Luna was 100 years older or Dumbledore was 100 years younger there would be nothing there. Also, saying that if Dumbledore's sexuality was straight they would work is wrong as then Dumbledore would have a completely different person. But what I can see, even through the age gap is close friends. I see that very well.

If he were straight, alive, and they were the same age, I agree with her. I could see it. :)

umm, sorry but i don't see this at all. first, there's the obvious age difference (i can't remember if luna's turned 17 at the end of DH but definitely, she's barely legal and dumbledore's ancient which would make their pairing kinda gross, but that's just me ^_^), and then dumbledore's been outed but his creator whether he wanted to or not (although, honestly i don't think experimenting would be beyond luna) and lastly, she's alive while he's very much dead (i think even luna would draw the line at necromancy) so i don't think there's any chance of this ship happening. seriously though, i see luna and dumbledore as having a father/daughter kind of relationship (or grandfather/granddaughter). i can only see them as quirky relatives and not in any sort of romantic light.

    Okay ...

IF they were the same age, roughly (and he was not an authority figure over her)

    and

    IF Dumbledore were not gay

    and

IF this newly age-appropriate Dumbledore had the "pleasant quirky fellow" personality that we know, instead of the "slightly bitter world conquerer" personality that he actually had in his teen years

then ... maybe. But I think Dumbledore, despite his whimsy, was a realist who based his worldview on what he could see, hear, feel, smell, touch, and taste to be real. I don't see him being interested in chasing Nargles (same reason why I reject Neville/Luna as a ship).

These two could go on a couple of dates, maybe attend support group meetings for people who lost family members at an early age, but I don't see romance blossoming.

Obviously it's just a fun thought experiment, not a reality. (But then again, even if it's in your head, why on earth shouldn't it be real?)

Like Dean said, I think if we're talking about the "pleasant quirky" Dumbledore (and ignoring the gay/dead aspect) that they could make a fun couple. Even if Luna's eccentric beliefs were contrary to Dumbledore's logic, I think he would enjoy her "manic-pixie-dreamgirl" tendencies. He would cherish Luna for the curiously wonderful person that she is, and she would keep him honest and grounded (ironically) with her forthright sincerity. I don't know if their relationship would last, but I love the idea. Go Evanna!

Yes, if they were closer in age, both alive and straight it would work. They would actually be a really cute couple. Their quirkiness together would be adorable. Dumbledore might be more planted & realistic than Luna but that would make their arguments very entertaining. They have enough to similarities and differences for a dynamic relationship. They are both imaginative and colorful and share the same inner core values. This is a relationship that could work.

LOL!! Bit creepy, eh? But, the article said that thy were a lot alike--I thought OPPOSITES attract, hm? :P
OH well, not gonna happen in MY fanfics anyways :PP

I reckon if Albus wasnt gay she could use a time turner, go back in time to when Albus was her age and it would work pretty well. I think she kind of suits Dumbledore's time anyway.

This idea is somewhere between just plain nuts and criminally insane.

If Dumbledore wasn't gay, they were even close to the same age, and everything had worked out differently...then MAYBE they would work together. I don't know though...

I don't think it would work. Dumbledore's kindness grew out of a youth shaped by mistakes and regret and a lifetime of learning to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Luna's excentricities are the result of being accepting of anything not demonstratably false. She hasn't faced (sometimes won't face?) her own misconceptions as APWBD did.

It would end in tragedy--and I don't wish that on either of them.

It would work out on a spiritual level for both characters. A man like Dumbledore understands that a woman likes to emulate her mother's skills and talents. He can show her the spells that her mother did not master, as well as provide anecdotes which her father does not know. In this alternate universe it may be Luna who duels Dumbledore in the tower in order to defend him against Draco. She could see into the remorse that Dumbledore felt towards the death of his sister, just as she is insightful with regards to others' experiences with death in their lives.

She's mentioned this before, hasn't she? Some time just before Book 7, IIRC.

I think it's an amusing idea for a fanfic, and I can see - given a time turner, obviously - where the appeal might be. But Dumbledore, when he was closer to Luna's age, was a very different person, and probably *not* the best match - regardless of his orientation - for someone like Luna.

"Eurgh," is my first reaction. It's a nauseating thought because of the huge age difference. Also, he's gay.

just the fact that people are thinking like that is indeed funny. however, it seems likely in another universe :P

Um... I honestly think it's a bit weird... I know they're both that omniscient type, but it just seems strange to me. I mean, first of all, Dumbledore's like 9 times her age. Second, Dumbledore doesn't swing that way, if you catch my drift. ;) Also, I don't think Luna would be happy around Hogwarts. I think there would be too many harsh memories for her there, and she would be much happier going around the world in search of her creatures.
All that aside, it would be an amusing ship fic to read.

Just read this and laughed. I love the shippers out there!

If Dumbledore was a teenager (and staright or bi), then maybe... MAYBE! But this is if we turned the books COMPLETELY on its head!
