Costco has finally made its way to Manhattan and after much controversy and a ton of delays and setbacks, Costco is officially open today in East Harlem. If you're like me then you love a good deal and Costco lets their club members buy items in bulk for affordable prices. Costco is a super popular and is listed as the 5th largest retailer in the US as of 2008.
Costco also marks the opening of the new East River Plaza located at the FDR Drive between 116th and 119th st. The area is so huge that it is also home to 1250 car parking lot, and is ready for consumers to come and shop. The Easy River Plaza has caused a lot of controversy and took almost 18 years to complete. But with the past complications set aside, Costco is now open and Target, Best Buy, and Marshall's will soon follow. But will those in the area come and shop there? Will the downtown set come uptown for bulk items?
Costco's packs in at 110,000 square foot and is expected to pack in big bucks for the retailers who inhabit the space. One other question we is is if Costco does well...does that mean that Wal-Mart will soon follow? A recent poll we did on our Harlem NY Facebook fan page (http://Facebook.com/HarlemNY) had consumers wanting Wal-Mart to come to Manhattan the most. So only time will tell but look out small retail and mom and pop stores...the big box retail chains are quickly moving in.

Costco of Harlem, are you equipped with wholesome organic foods for vegans and vegetarians. Please say yes and give Whole Foods some competition. We need a wide range of green leafy vegetables two or three times a week, but also bulk good quality dry foods that can be purchased in bulk.
18 years to complete? That is a long time!
