Dissidia Final Fantasy demo impressions

Truer words have never been spoken

The demo for Dissidia Final Fantasy went live on the PSN store last week and I spent the weekend with it.

Final Fantasy based fighting games, or RPG based fighting games in general have always had a bad habit of not being good.  Dissidia shows that they're getting better with the genre, but still have a way to go.

If you were around for the Dreamcast days or picked up the PSP version, you'll notice this game is a lot like Capcom's Powerstone.  You and an opponent face off in a large 3D environment and can use elements of that environment to your advantage such as slamming your opponent into a wall or running up a pillar.  As far as combat goes you, have a life meter and a bravery meter that has a number assigned to it.  Whatever number of bravery you have is how much your attacks will hit for.  You can attack your opponents bravery meter as well and steal their points to make your attacks more powerful as well.  There is also a special helmet that will appear which will send you into EX mode where you will have the ability to perform a devastating attack that will cripple your opponent.

The levels are huge and make you think about the best strategy for winning.  They've gone beyond just picking the most popular characters from the numerous games, but actually made them feel like themselves.  Let's just hope the retail version will have the Japanese language track, because the dubbed voices will have you cringing every time you throw an attack.  And speaking of attacks, there were only 5 per character in the demo.  There were no story elements in it, either.  As far as Final Fantasy spinoffs go though, this one does seem worth checking out from what I've played.

Sorry, not gonna happen. Square Enix has already confirmed that themselves, since the UMD doesn't even have enough space to hold two different language voice tracks. Besides, the English voices aren't all that bad, especially when you have people like Johnny Yong Bosch doing the voice of Firion and Chris Sabat as Garland. The more you listen to them, the more you will get used to it, trust me!

You get over twice as many attacks in the real game. And there's a story mode, equipment, customization, more characters, the whole works tbh.
