Animal simulation games have become all the rage in recent years. With games like Nintendogs and the entire Petz series, it seems everyone wants a virtual pet on their DS. But most of those games are limited to traditional pets like cats and dogs, and maybe sometimes horses or bunnies.
That's why Puffins Island Adventure is so intriguing. Rather than playing with an animal you're likely to see everyday, it gives you a glimpse into the life of an animal many of us have never seen before, unless you live on the Northern East coast of Canada, that is. Fortunately for us, that's where the developers are from, so we know we're getting a pretty accurate picture.
In Puffins Island Adventure, you take control of a fledgling puffin as he or she (you get to pick) tries to become a valuable member of the flock. You do this by interacting with other puffins, learning some much-needed skills and eventually finding a mate and producing another puffin.

The skills you need to learn are played out in the form of minigames. Flying, diving, fishing and even egg rolling each have their own minigame. And while all of these games are simple in concept, that doesn't mean they don't provide challenge. There are multiple levels or "courses" to each game and they get more complex as you go along, keeping everything fresh.Besides all the minigames, some of your puffin neighbors will send you on missions to collect things around the island. Doing this, as well as scoring well in the minigames will help unlock new areas of the island and eventually your very own puffin home.
And there's plenty to unlock here. Throughout the game you collect capelin, which are small fish in case you didn't know, and can spend them to purchase furnishings for your home or live video of real puffins in action. The game also gives you factoids about puffins here and there, making it just as educational as it is fun.
If you love animals or have a little one who loves animals, be sure to be on the lookout for this one when it's released on April 14.
