Freedom! This is the underlying theme for women of African descent with natural hair. Maria Thompson (Hair Educator) believes that, “Natural hair is here to stay; more and more women are going natural.” The population of everyday women that are embracing the idea of “going natural” increases with the popularity of celebrities choosing to do so (i.e. Solange Knowles, Erykah Badu, Chrisette Michelle etc.). Take notice that the names mentioned are notable entertainers (singer/songwriters) that are allowed a degree of expression to exercise their artistic “freedom”. These women are aiding the African diaspora in the acceptance of their natural hair as well as the acceptance of themselves as it relates to society.
When Sasha-Shae Shaw (Student/Blogger) was asked, how do you feel about natural hair? She responded, “I love it! I think natural hair is amazing and freeing.” It has long been noted that water is the arch nemesis of a black woman’s hair but that’s in a chemically altered state. Lifestyles are determined by what relaxed hair is able to withstand. The beauty of natural hair is that it allows freedom of expression (braids, twists, locs etc.) and lifestyle (time efficient, swimming, exercising etc.)
Not limited to the hindrance of chemically enhanced coifs; women are able to focus more on their life and less on the limitations of their hair. However, the societal pressures to assimilate continue to plague the conscience of those with or considering a natural hairstyle. “It takes boldness to wear your natural hair because people associate negativity with black features (i.e. hair, skin-tone, full lips etc.)”, says the prideful Michaela Thomas (Counselor).
The beauty of natural hair is not solely the creative styling. It is the freedom that is expressed by being in a natural state, being yourself and how your outward appearance reflects your inner character. This is no indictment on chemically relaxed hairstyles but just in case your stylist can’t fit you in for your creamy fix, remember that the “creator” does a pretty good wash-n-go styling.
