Hundreds of school closings due to H1N1 outbreak

Schools are closing quickly as many have been hit hard by the H1N1 virus and the only way to deal with the outbreak is to close the school for a few days and in some cases over one week. The federal government has asked schools to shut down operations from an H1N1 outbreak only as a last resort. As we can see many schools have opted for the last option they had in coping with this virus and that is to close theri doors. School nurses have been overwhelmed as many students pack into the nurse’s office to get treatment for flu-like symptoms. Also there has been an increasing number of students nationwide staying home due to illness. Last spring there was close to 700 school closures due to localized H1N1 outbreaks. So far this year 600 schools have closed due to the H1N1 virus. The U.S. Education Department reports that at least 351 schools were closed last week alone, affecting 126,000 students in 19 states.

Here in Findlay, Ohio- our school just released data that the flu is not causing any more absenteeism (less than 1% more) than last year at this same time. Also, the cases being reported by the CDC as "swine" flu include "ALL" flus after Aug 31. Check their site, they admit it quietly. There is no pandemic. This is a flu season. H1N1 is a normal part of the flu season. This version is no more vigilant than other forms and there are no more deaths or illness...so why the big hoopla? Everyone is so frightened, more so than the big "Avian Flu" scare a few years ago that sent people into panic. NOTHING HAPPENED THEN EITHER.
Why is the government pushing SO HARD about this? Is it the drug company-vaccine lobbyists? Or is it the push for public health care. Scary, whatever is happening.
