Saturday NCAA roundup: Alabama wins at Metroplex, West Chester women set records

Saturday night in the NCAA looked like this:

BYU vs. Iowa State and Utah State @ Utah State: In the end, it was a tie. BYU and Iowa State recorded the NCAA's second tie of the season, each team scoring 194.925. The all-around was a tie as well, between Iowa State's Michelle Browning and Michelle Shealy, who each scored 39.1 (BYU did not compete any gymnast on all four events.) Iowa's Celine Paulus won vault (9.725), BYU's Haylee Rollins floor (9.875) and her teammate Krysten Koval beam (9.875). Browning and Iowa State's Jody McKellar tied for the title on bars (9.85). Cornell vs. Cortland @ Cornell: This meet was all Cornell. The team from the cornfields of Ithaca, New York easily beat in-state rival SUY Cortland, scoring 189.95 to Cortland's 180.225. Cornell gymnasts also swept the individual honors: McKenna Archer won vault (9.625), Lexi Schupp bars (9.675), Melanie Standridge beam (9.725) and Maddie Pearsall floor (9.6). Cortland's Sarah Nadrowski, the only gymnast from either team to compete on all four events, won the all-around (36.8). (Cornell Big Red)

Eastern Michigan vs. Ball State @ Eastern Michigan: Ball State pulled out a narrow victory over its host, scoring 192.625 to EMU's 191.075. Ball State's Brittany Emmons won vault (9.725) and bars (9.75), while Emily Wehrle took the beam title (9.7) and Nicole Allen delivered the biggest score of the meet on floor (9.875) to seal the all-around title (38.7). Illinois vs. Iowa @ Illinois: Illinois's home opener was a winner for the host team, which scored 194.775 to pass Iowa, which tallied 193.475. All-around champion Allison Buckley of Illinois (39.325) also won beam (9.9) and floor (9.825). Iowa's Houry Gebashian came through for the Hawkeyes by winning bars (9.875) and Illinois's Kelsey Joannides won vault (9.85). (Fighting Illini)

Alabama vs. LSU, Nebraska and Missouri @ Metroplex Challenge: Alabama threw down a very impressive 196.825 to take the title at the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, ahead of Nebraska (195.6), LSU (195.55) and Missouri (194.35). Alabama senior Kayla Hoffman won the all-around with a career high 39.525 and added titles on vault (9.925) bars (9.925, shared with Ashley Sledge, for whom the score was a career high) and beam (shared with Geralen Stack-Eaton, 9.9). Michigan vs. Maryland, Kent State, Illinois-Chicago @ Michigan: Michigan posted a season high (195.875) in the process of winning this quad meet against Kent State (194.675), Maryland (193.8) and Illinois-Chicago (189.875). Michigan senior Kylee Botterman gave another tour-de-force performance, winning the all-around (39.525), floor (9.9), beam (9.875) and tying for first on bars with Kent State's Lindsey Runyan (9.925). Minnesota vs. Air Force @ Minnesota
: With a season high 195.575, Minnesota easily won against Air Force (191.5). Five different Golden Gopher gymnasts picked up first place honors at home Saturday night: Lucy Ennis and Kayla Slechta won vault (9.85), Kristin Furukawa bars (9.875), Kendra Elm beam (9.8) and Shannon Golich floor (9.875). Pennsylvania vs. Yale @ Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania had no problem outscoring Yale 187.2 to 181.0. Penn's Dana Bonincontri won the all-around (38.15) as well as bars (9.45) and beam (9.425), while her teammate Kirsten Strausbaugh won floor (9.725). Yale's Tara Feld won vault (9.75) and finished second in the all-around. (Penn Quakers)

Southern Connecticut vs. Temple: @ Southern Connecticut: Temple got the better of Southern Connecticut in a close meet Saturday, but despite home court advantage, the final score was 186.425-185.375 in favor of Temple. But all was not lost for Southern Connecticut -- senior Justine Basley and freshman Gabriella Hude won bars (9.475) and floor (9.35), while Temple's Kaitlyn Watson was the best on vault (9.55) and Corrine Williams the top gymnast on floor (9.525). Southern Connecticut's Mallory Miller, the only gymnast to compete as an all-arounder, tallied 36.325. (Southern Connecticut Owls)

Texas Woman's vs. Centenary, Hamline and Winona @ Texas Woman's: Texas Woman's was the top team at home in Denton, Texas, scoring 192.45 to Centenary's 187.575, Winona State's (182.6) and Hamline's 180.575. The Pioneer women won everything else as well -- junior Rashona Cannie was the best on bars (9.775), while Bethany Larimer won vault (9.85). Sophomore Brittany Johnson won beam (9.65) and floor (9.75). (TWU Pioneers)

Towson vs. George Washington @ Towson
: Towson took the team title over George Washington, scoring 193.175 to GWU's 190.525. GWU's Leslie Delima was the top gymnast in the all-around (38.8) and also won floor (9.775); her teammate Kayla Carto won beam (9.7). On bars, Towson's Kacy Catanzaro was the event winner (9.8), while her Tiger teammate Avis Hixson won vault (9.75). (Towson Tigers)

West Chester vs. SUNY Brockport and Rhode Island @ West Chester
: It was a record-setting afternoon for the West Chester women, who set a new school best mark with a 185.875 to Brockport's 183.75 and Rhode Island's 146.825. (West Chester's team bars score, 45.875, also set a new school record.) Brockport's Kaitlyn Dewey was the victor on floor (9.575), bars (9.65), vault (9.575) and in the all-around (37.9). West Virginia vs. Pittsburgh and Rutgers @ West Virginia: A happy West Virginia squad took the team title in this east coast tri-meet, scoring 194.075 to Rutgers's 191.15 and Pittsburgh's 189.025. There was a five-way tie on vault, where WVU's Tina Maloney, Amy Bieski and Hope Sloanhoffer tied with Pitt's Molly Moyer and Rutgers's Luisa Leal for the title (9.8). Sloanhoffer also won beam (9.8) and teammate Kaylyn Millick floor (9.9), while Mountaineer Emily Kerwin took the title on bars (9.825). Leal won the all-around (38.85). (Pittsburgh Panthers)

Wilson vs. Ursinus @ Wilson: Ursinus got the better of D-III rival Wilson, outscoring it 179.725-165.85. Wilson's Alexandre Howard captured the all-around title (36.45), while four Ursinus gymnasts picked up an event title: Erin Slaunwhite on floor (9.5), Danielle Michielli on beam (9.15), Johanna Warren on bars (9.375) and Monica Durham on vault (9.475). Wisconsin-Stout vs. Wisconsin-Whitewater @ Stout: Whitewater won out over Stout, scoring 180.025 to Stout's 178.5. Whitewater's Katie Thompson was the all-around winner (39.975), while Stout's Naomi DeLara was first on floor (9.575) and shared the beam title with teammate Kaitlynn Christensen (9.125). Stout's Jenna Lensing shared the bars title with Whitewater's Katie Thompson (9.1), and DeLara and Whitewater's Allison Nelson each took a share of first prize on vault (9.425). (UW Stout)

Men's NCAA gymnastics:

Illinois vs. Iowa @ Illinois: Illinois won easily, 354.9-339.4. Illini gymnasts Tyler Mizoguchi (89.3) and senior Paul Ruggeri each scored two wins -- Ruggeri on floor (15.6) and high bar (14.4), Mizoguchi on parallel bars (15.3) and the all-around (89.3). On vault, Illinois's Yoshi Mori tied for the win with Iowa's Ben Ketelsen and Matt McGrath (15.9). The rest was all Illinois -- Daniel Ribeiro won pommel horse (15.9) and Anthony Sacramento rings (15.3). (Fighting Illini)

Oklahoma vs. Minnesota @ Oklahoma: With a score of 344.65, Oklahoma, expected to be a competitor for the 2011 NCAA title, won its meet over Minnesota (336.75) and a club team from Texas (293.4) Saturday night. Still, the tally seems a bit...under what we've come to expect from Oklahoma in recent seasons, given that Stanford topped them by no fewer than 20 points last weekend. However, there can be no doubting that this team has some good gymnasts -- sophomore NCAA pommel champion Alex Naddour led the all-around race (83.25), while Jake Dalton won floor (15.05), vault (16.55) and high bar (14.45). Troy Nitzky won rings (15.35) and pommel horse (13.85), while Chris Stehl; was the best on parallel bars (14.05). (Oklahoma Sooners)
