Quick hits: Youth Olympic Games, women's all-around final

Russia’s Viktoria Komova owned it. Here are the quick hits of what she and everyone else did:

Rotation one:

Carlotta Ferlito, vault: Nice FTY (she’s capable of a double), just a hop back. 14.15.

Tan Sixin, vault: DTY, rather low and a little crooked in the air, but impressive that she made it. Large step back. 14.4.

Viktoria Komova, vault: Amanar, well done with just a step forward. Also a tiny bit of knee form at the end of the 2.5 twist, but that’s if I’m really picky. She twists so fast I’m not sure the judges will see it much.

Ana Maria Gomez, vault: FTY with a step forward. Very piked and knees in the air.

Tess Moonen, vault: Handspring front pike, small step forward. Too bad this vault only starts at a 4.6.

The knee tape is off for Komova. Boy, she puts a lot of junk on her knees to vault. Side note: With her bangs, she looks every inch a Soviet from the 80s.

Diana Bulimar, vault: FTY with a step forward. Like many Romanians of late, Bulimar has a huge leg separation coming off the springboard and onto the horse. She pulls her legs together quickly in a movement that probably generates some momentum for her. Reminds me of Steliana Nistor on the same event. 13.65.

Jonna Adlerteg, vault: FTY, piked down at the end but otherwise nice. 13.65.

Madeline Gardiner, vault: FTY, sizeable hop back. Gets a kiss on the cheek from coach Elvira Saadi, though. 13.8.

Angela Donald, vault: Yurchenko layout, small hop back.

Jessica Hogg, bars: Jump to high, full turn to blind, bail, hecht to high, toe stalder, Arabian double tuck dismount. Messy legs throughout.

Elisa Haemmerle, bars: Hecht mount, stalder, full turn, Geinger, bail, hecht to high, nearly stuck double pike. Just a couple leg separations, namely on the Geinger and bail, but a nice routine from this young Austrian. 12.4/4.3/8.1

Park Kyungjin, bars: Ray, inbar blind to Markelov, inbar stalder full to Geinger, misses and falls. Toe stalder to messy Pak, half turn to toe hecht to high, messy double layout with a step back. 10.9.

Maria Vargas, bars: Toe hecht to high, clear hip, toe stalder, blind, big Jaeger, bail to Ray, full turn, double pike with a step back. Probably gets the amplitude award on bars. Big, clean gymnastics, like we’ve come to expect from the Spanish women on bars. She’s wearing a leo with the Olympic rings above the Spanish flag.

Kosthia Requena, bars: Toe stalder, toe hecht to high, blind to pike Jaeger, bail to sole circle to high. Full turn, double pike with some steps back. Looks very happy.

Natsumi Sasada, bars: Inbar stalder full to Tkatchev, blind to Endo, front stalder, bail, Ray, stalder, giant, full twisting double tuck. Great work. I’m impressed with how she’s grown into a more powerful body, but still has great lines. 14.05.

Rotation two:

Harumy Freitas, beam: Leap on. Clean bhs, layout. Nice front aerial. Good side aerial. Switch, back tuck, little check. Scissone, wolf. Full turn. Double tuck with small hop. A solid and confident routine, but leaves the impression of a gymnast who simply does her difficulty and gets off the equipment. Even in this code, the lack of choreography is remarkable here.

Tan Sixin, bars: Ray, blind to 1.5 pirouette to blind to…to Jaeger pike. Blind, full turn, Jaeger. Pak to toe hecht. Double front dismount with tiny hop. Her coaches are happy with that! 14.35.

Natsumi Sasada, beam: Simple mount – no layout Garrison today. Punch front with a step. Bhs, layout. Wonderful clean lines. Switch ring, wobble. Full turn with leg at head. Front aerial. Switch, back tuck, wobble. Sheep, wobble. Stuck double pike, excellent. 14.1/5.7/8.4

Viktoria Komova, bars: Khorkina (Shaposhnikova half) transition right off the top, blind, layout Jaeger, toe stalder, toe stalder full to Tkatchev to Pak, Ray, full twisting double tuck with a small hop. Great routine, beautifully executed. 14.45/6.5/8.95.

Ana Sofia Gomez, bars: Straddle toe hecht to high, toe stalder full to Geinger, blind, giant, Jaeger. Bail to Ray. Full twisting double tuck, small hop back. 13.1/5.5/7.6

Tess Moonen, bars: Toe stalder to Maloney to Bail, toe hecht to high, full turn, blind to Jaeger, nice, half turn, double pike, just a tiny shuffle to the side. The best thing about Moonen is definitely her clean lines and form. Striking routine.13.45, 5.3, 8.15.

Diana Bulimar, bars: Clea r hip, toe stalder, stalder, toe hecht to high, half turn to stalder full to Tkatchev. Bail, hecht to high, blind, half turn, giants, very high double pike with step back. High fives from her coach. Looks ready to upgrade on this event, especially on the dismount. 12.7/5.1/7.6.

Only 7.85 execution on bars for Tan is surprising. Perhaps she missed some handstands…

Komova in front by like 2.5 points after two rotations thusfar…

Jonna Adlerteg, bars: Hecht mount, blind to inverts to Jaeger, clear hip to toe stalder to full turn to giant to bail, toe hechto high, giants, double layout with a small hop. Little leg separation at the beginning of the double layout, but not bad at all. With her grips still on, Jonna is redoing her bun.

Cut to Komova smiling and laughing with her coach.

Natsumi Sasada’s coaches obviously take the “serious talk every 10 seconds to keep focused” approach. 13.25/5.0/8.25.

Madeline Gardiner, bars: Toe stalder (one foot at a time), Maloney (same deal) to bail to toe hecht to high, to stalder to blind to Jaeger, nice, full turn, half turn, giants, double pike with a step forward. Good routine. 13.15/5.1/8.05.

Angela Donald, bars: Jump to high, bail, toe hecht to high, Tkatchev. Clear hip, giants, full turn, blind, half turn, more giants, full twisting double tuck, small hop. Really nice form on the dismount. 13.1/4.9/8.2.

Carlotta Ferlito, bars: Jump to high, bail to Ray, stalder, stalder full out of handstand, stalder blind to hecht over the bar (like the men do out of Takemotos). Not much height on that release, but very interesting. Dismount is toe on front with a half, takes a step back. Interesting routine with some unusual combinations – releases and dismount. 12.75/5.0/7.75.

Kosthia Requena, beam: Bhs, layout, little wobble. Switch. Side aerial, good. Front aerial, small pause, back tuck, nice. Tourjete half, wobble. Side somie. Full turn. Switch half. Split, wolf. Roundoff, double full with a step. Again, the impression is of very little artistry. She does her difficulty and gets off with nary an arm wave in the whole set. 13.25/5.0/8.25

Alina Kravchenko, beam: Press handstand mount. Switch side, wobble. Front aerial. Switch. Side aerial. Side somie. Bhs, back pike, small steps. Scissone, wolf. Off on full turn with leg up. Come on, Ukrainians! Front layout full dismount. Step, trick. Step, trick. Even from Ukraine, no artistry.

Rotation three:

Natsumi Sasada, floor: Sasada had problems here in qualifying…Full twisting double tuck with small steps. Punch front through to double tuck with a step back. Big band music that has been used by several people over the years, notably Carly Patterson in 2004. Switch half. Choreo doesn’t really match the music, but her movements are nice. Double full, I think. Switch ring. Tourjete half. Double pike, large step forward due to underrotation.

Viktoria Komova, beam: Forward roll on. Punch front, solid. Bhs to two layout stepouts, doesn’t get any better than that. Standing Arabian, small wobble. Like day one. Lovely full turn with leg up to immediate front aerial to sheep. Side somie. Switch leap. WOW – two bhs to really high double tuck to great landing, just a small hop. Her coaches high five each other. Viktoria gets kisses coming off the podium. 15.25/6.0/9.25.

Ana Sofia Gomez, beam: Nice press mount. Bhs to tucked full, very nice. Small check but hey…switch to back pike. Wolf full, don’t see that too often on beam. Side aerial. Front aerial to back tuck, steps back but steadies herself. Split jump. Switch side. Two bhs to 1.5 twisting dismount, I believe. (Might have been 2.5, not sure.) Wonderful routine for this unknown from Guatemala! 14.15/5.8/8.35

Tess Moonen, beam: This should be a good event for her; she was third at the junior Europeans here. Leap on, split jump, scissone. Off on front pike somie. Too bad. She fought for it but couldn’t save it. Front aerial, wobble. Switch to back tuck, another wobble. Side aerial, side somie combination, nice. Almost falls on sheep jump. Switch half. Full turn. Front layout full, small step. It looks to me like Moonen might have been growing a little bit and is just struggling a little to readjust her gymnastics.

Diana Bulimar, beam: Switch, back pike. Side somie, lands with chest low, small wobble. Switch side half, same problem. Small check on side aerial. Punch front. Bhs, layout, solid. Front aerial, tiny check. Sheep. Full turn. Two bhs to double pike, terrific landing, stuck except for a little tiny hop to the side. 13.9/5.7/8.2

Jonna Adlerteg, beam: Press mount to shoulder stand. Switch, scissone. Wonderful long lines. Front aerial, pause, bhs, layout, wobble. Wow, she was really off on the bhs, layout, and it’s really a wonder she saved it. Full turn with leg up. Back tuck. Sheep, wobble. Side somie. Switch ring maybe? Leg nowhere near head, head not far back at all. Roundoff double tuck with a step back. 12.55/4.7/7.85

Madeline Gardiner, beam: Double turn in sit position to splits without hands touching beam – really cool. Off on Onodi. Looked like her landing foot slipped off the beam. Front aerial, bhs, layout, off again. Beam looks slippery when she works it, and she and Elvira Saadi were wiping it down before she got on…switch half. Changeleg side aerial. Side somie. No problems on any of those. Double pike, overrotates, big step back. Not the routine she was hoping for. Too bad, too – had a wonderful start. 12.1/5.7/6.4

Angela Donald, beam: Leap on. Switch ring. Rulfova. Front aerial. Bhs, layout, steps back quickly but is all right. Switch ring, wobble. Side aerial. Side somie, leg comes up and wobble. Sheep to back tuck. Full turn, small check. Two bhs to double full, nice landing. Very quick with all her movements on this event. 13.8/5.7/8.1.

Now that floor’s over, Sasada and her coaches are cutting loose a bit, laughing and joking.

Carlotta Ferlito, beam: Press mount, lowers to middle splits. Kick to handstand. Switch, back tuck, aggressive. Sheep. Front aerial, bhs, layout. Wolf, scissone. Full turn, full turn with leg at head, nice. Switch ring, good. Roundoff, 2.5 to excellent landing, just a small hop. Very aggressive work, a great routine. She absolutely attacked, and she nailed it. 14.5/5.5/9.0.

Tan Sixin, beam: Bhs, bhs to two feet, layout to two feet, immediate bhs swingdown. Lovely. Switch ring, great. High punch front, small step forward. Front aerial, balance check. Sheep, same thing. Side aerial. Switch, pause, split, wolf. Full turn. Two bhs to 2.5 twist, good landing. 15.35/6.2/9.15 moves her into second going into the final rotation.

Rotation four:

Ana Sofia Gomez, floor: Full twisting double tuck, small hop. Triple full, step back. Switch leap, switch half. Switch side half. Spanish flamenco guitar music is rather soft. 2.5 to front tuck. Double turn. Popa. Double tuck, small shuffle forward. 13.4.

Jessica Hogg, vault: Low, short FTY with big step forward. 13.25/5.0/8.25

Tess Moonen, floor: Double pike, step back. Double tuck, steps back and OOB. Lots of choreography with big sweeping body wave type movements. 1.5 to front layout to scissone. Switch ring, switch half. Front full to single stag jump. 13.1/5.2 D-score.

Park Kyungjin, vault: FTY with a hop. 13.6/5.0/8.6

Diana Bulimar, floor: Full twisting double pike, step back. 1.5 to double tuck, great landing. Switch full, looked like. 2.5, step back. Side somie. Switch, Tourjete half. Double pike, hop forward. Maybe it’s just me, but she seems to be paying less attention to the dance. But that’s what I’m expecting to see, given the history of Octavian Belu and Mariana Bitang. 13.7/5.4/8.3

Jonna Adlerteg, floor: Double pike, step back. Double turn. Double tuck. Switch, switch side. Orchaestral music, lots of brass. Switch ring. Front full to front tuck. Music transforms to being a bit Oriental at the end. Front double full to end. 13.15/4.9 D-score.

Madeline Gardiner, floor: Switch half. Triple full. 1.5 to double full. Double turn with leg at head. Music is Schindler’s List? 2.5 with step forward. Froont aerial, switch, tourjete half? Hands down on double pike. Too bad!

Natsumi Sasada, vault: DTY basically to her knees, but did not put her hands down and just took a huge step forward. Came onto the horse pretty high and didn’t get great block, which led to the low vault. Good form though. 13.8/5.8/8.0

Carlotta Ferlito, floor: Loudest leo in the meet; it’s pink and black and white and sparkles and flames and swirls…as close as gymnastics leotards get to Pucci, I suppose. Anyways, neither here nor there. Needs 13.9 to move into bronze medal position. Full twisting Tourjete. Wonderful triple full, stuck. Double pike, another great landing. Switch ring, switch half. Great double turn with leg at head. Whip to double full, another stick. Front aerial. Not too much choreo…double tuck, steps forward, just a tad underrotated. Will this get a 13.9? It could, given that Bulimar got a 13.7 with many more hops and steps on her passes. 13.95. She yells! So does her coach. Sasada is in tears.

Tan Sixin, floor: Front double full to single stag jump, nice. Double pike, stuck. Lovely choreography. Wonderful Memmel turn. 1.5 to front full, couple steps forward. Switch ring, switch leap. 2.5, shuffle forward. Tan is waving to the crowd! 14.4/5.5/8.9

Viktoria Komova, floor: 1.5 to Arabian double front, great landing. Easy double tuck, stuck. Double turn with leg up. Switch, Tourjete half. Triple full, step back. Still great. Seems to have taken more command of her James Bond-ish choreography than last year. Gorgeous Memmel turn. Double pike with step back. Waves to the crowd. Coach is clapping, kisses Ferlito, gets a huge hug from her coach. Youth Olympic Games gold medalist now, Olympic Games gold medalist in 2012? It really could happen. 14.9/5.9/9.0.

So your final results:

Gold – Viktoria Komova, 61.25
Silver - Tan Sixin, 58.5
Bronze - Carlotta Ferlito, 55.35

  • Thank you SO much for giving quick hits with actual names of elements in them. I don't know if you actually got to go watch the competition or if you saw it online on the YOG website or what, but whoever was doing commentary on the free stream from the site Monday night did not know the name of ANYTHING. It was really frustrating!
