Oklahoma has one heck of a season going on, both in men's and women's gymnastics. The OU women, currently ranked no. 1 in the nation, have everything it takes to be successful in the post season.
Depth? Check.
Talent? Check.
Ability to hit under pressure? Check.
The only thing missing from OU's list of accolades this season was a perfect 10 from someone.
Oh, wait. Check.
Sophomore Sara Stone stuck a picture-perfect vault at Michigan State Friday night, posting the first perfect 10 for a Sooner woman since 2008, when former Sooner Kiara Redmond also drilled a 10-worthy vault.
Oklahoma celebrated by sweeping the first place finishes against Michigan State, defeating the Spartans 196.825-194.125.
Note: The only perfect scores that have been given out this season have all been on vault. In addition to Stone and UCLA's Vanessa Zamarripa, who was perfection on the event Friday night against Utah State and Cal State Fullerton, Nebraska's Erin Davis and Penn State's Brandi Personett have been the only other gymnasts to score 10s so far.
Friday night capsules:
Oklahoma vs. Michigan State @ Michigan State: Oklahoma 196.825, Michigan State 194.125. OU sophomore Sara Stone gave the Sooners its first perfect 10 since 2008 on vault, while Brie Olson won bars (9.85), Hollie Vise beam (9.925) and Jackie Flanery floor (9.95). (SoonerSports.com)
Kentucky vs. Alabama @ Kentucky: Alabama 197.225, Kentucky 195.65. With this win, no. 2 Alabama posted something higher than 197 for the fourth time this season. Senior Morgan Dennis won the all-around (39.55), vault (9.975, tying career high), floor exercise (9.9) and also tied teammate Ashley Priess for the top score on beam (9.9, another career-high tie for Dennis). Priess and Kayla Hoffman had the best scores of the night on uneven bars (9.875). (RollTide.com)
Washington vs. Arkansas and Seattle Pacific @ Washington: Arkansas 196.075, Washington 194.1, Seattle Pacific 188.275. Seattle native Sarah Nagashima won the all-around for Arkansas with 39.175. Arkansas senior Casey Jo Magee won beam (9.925) and tied teammate Jaime Pisani for the floor title (9.9). Pisani also won vault (9.875). Washington junior Samantha Walior had the best score on uneven bars (9.9, tying career high). (ArkansasRazorbacks.com)
UCLA vs. Cal State Fullerton and Utah State @ Cal State Fullerton: UCLA 197.25, Cal State Fullerton 191.75, Utah State 188.7. No more holding back for UCLA. The Bruins set no fewer than 10 career highs Friday night, and to make things even better, sophomore star Vanessa Zamarripa scored the team's first perfect 10 of the season on vault, while freshman Monique de la Torre picked up her first individual title as a Bruin on bars (9.875) and Zamarripa and Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs shared the beam title (9.9). Zamarripa also won floor (9.95), while Tauny Frattone picked up the all-around (39.325). UCLA sat senior Anna Li this week. (UCLABruins.com)
Auburn vs. Florida @ Auburn: Florida 196.8, Auburn 195.7. It's no secret that Florida is being carried by its freshmen Ashanée Dickerson and Marissa King, who went 1-2 in the all-around to lead the Gators against Auburn Friday night. but it is nice to see so many Florida gymnasts excelling. Dickerson won her fifth all-around title this season (39.3) as well as floor (39.35), while freshman Liz Green and Courtney Gladys tied for the beam win (9.85). Elizabeth Mahlich and senior Maranda Smith shared the bars win (9.875), while Gladys won vault (9.9). (Gatorzone.com)
Boise State vs. Southern Utah @ Southern Utah: Boise State 196.1, Southern Utah 195.425. As a team, Boise State had its best meet of the season, but Southern Utah senior Elise Wheeler also gave a performance worth talking about. Wheeler won the all-around (39.55), as well as uneven bars (9.875), balance beam (9.9) and floor exercise (9.875). Boise State's Hannah Redmon was the best in the meet on vault (9.925). (BroncoSports.com)
San Jose State vs. Sacramento State and UC Davis @ San Jose State: San Jose State 194.55, Davis 193.75, Sacramento State 193.55. San Jose State's Thomasina Wallace tied for the floor title with teammate Gabrielle Targosz (9.85), while Sacramento State's Carla Boyce won beam (9.775) and Davis's Lida Gehlen was first on bars (9.875). Davis's Katie Yamamura and SJSU's Lily Swann tied on vault (9.825). (SJSUSpartans.com)
Oregon State vs. Arizona State @ Arizona State: Oregon State 196.925, Arizona State 194.65. Maybe reeling a bit from its loss to UCLA last weekend, Oregon State is undoubtedly pleased with its results against Arizona State. OSU recoreded its fourth-highest score ever on the road, and reeled in three individual event titles. Mandi Rodriguez won vault (9.925) and tied fellow senior Laura-Ann Chong for the beam title (9.9). Freshman star Makayla Stambaugh won bars (9.925). Arizona State's Mary Atkinson prevented a Beaver sweep, winning floor (9.9) and the all-around (39.225). What Oregon State doesn't have is the name recognition that Georgia, Utah or UCLA get immediately. They're a better team than many may be thinking at this point. (OSUBeavers.com)
Illinois State vs. Missouri @ Missouri (Cat Classic): Missouri 196.875, Illinois State 194.4. Missouri set a new season high and, as if she hadn't already, senior Sarah Shire solidified her place as one of Mizzou's best-ever gymnasts by posting a school record 39.725 in the all-around. Shire won everything Friday night -- she had 9.9s on vault and bars, and scored 9.95 on beam. She capped it off with a 9.975 on floor to share that title with teammate Mary Burke, who will likely be her successor as team leader next season. (MUTigers.com)
Georgia vs. LSU @ Georgia: Georgia 196.575, LSU 196.05. The Gym Dogs did not even try to see if they had an all-arounder who could top LSU senior Susan Jackson, who easily won her seventh overall title this season (39.45). Jackson was first on vault (9.95) and shared the bars title with Georgia's Marcia Newby and Courtney McCool (9.875). McCool and Grace Taylor had the top scores on beam (9.925) and McCool won floor (9.95). There's nothing at all wrong with Georgia's anchors, but the Gym Dogs do have some unsteadiness early in the lineup on beam, which is one reason they aren't scoring higher. (GeorgiaDogs.com)
Utah vs. BYU @ BYU: Utah 195.925, BYU 194.375. A win is a win (Georgia's Jay Clark can commiserate) but there's a high probability that Utah coach Greg Marsden is none too pleased to be scoring below 196 at this point in the season. Where the Utes went wrong this week is on balance beam, where they gave up a good 0.6 by having to count a fall from senior Annie DiLuzio, who has never pretended that beam is her best event. Otherwise, it was typical Ute fare -- DiLuzio won vault and floor (9.9 and 9.9, respectively), senior Daria Bijak took bars (9.9) and the consistent Jamie Deetscreek won beam (9.925). Junior Kyndal Robarts tied DuLuzio for the vault title and also won the all-around (39.375). (UtahUtes.com)
George Washington vs. Towson @ Towson: Towson 193.45, George Washington 192.05. George Washington's Leslie Delima captured the all-around (38.775) and floor (9.875) titles, but Towson's Tigers took everything else as the team gave its highest scoring performance of the season. Kacy Catanzaro and Alise McDonald each scored 9.775 on vault to share the title there, while Jackie Schweitzer posted the top scores on uneven bars (9.775) and balance beam (9.75). (TowsonTigers.com)
Minnesota vs. Iowa State @ Iowa State: Iowa State 195.475, Minnesota 195.2. On the upside for Minnesota, this was a season-best road score, and Gopher gymnasts also won individual titles on vault and balance beam. Iowa State's Michelle Browning was the top gymnast in the all-around (39.35) and also won floor exericse (9.925). Iowa State's Jody McKellar and Ceilia Maccani tied for the bars title (9.875), while Kendra Elm won vault (9.875) and Kristin Furukawa was the top gymnast on beam (9.9). (GopherSports.com)
