Sunday was a night of steadiness in NCAA competitions. All the teams expected to win did so, and the individual winners's names are familiar. Junior Hannah Redmon is Boise State's rock, senior Mandi Rodriguez and freshman Makayla Stambaugh are the undisputed leaders at Oregon State and newcomer Ashley Morgan, daughter of baseball great Joe Morgan, is an up-and-comer at Stanford. Morgan won her first NCAA all-around title against Washington, Sacramento State and San Jose State, besting senior teammate Carly Janiga.
Here's what else happened Sunday night in NCAA women's gymnastics:
Oregon State vs. Cal @ Cal: Oregon State 196.375, Cal 190.1. Unfortunately for struggling Cal, this was one of the most lopsided NCAA meets of the season, with OSU capturing no fewer than the top four places on all events. Oregon State senior Mandi Rodriguez won the all-around (39.375) over freshman Makayla Stambaugh (38.825) and also captured the beam title (9.85). OSU's Becky Colvin was the top gymnast on vault (9.925), while Stambaugh won bars (9.9) and shared the floor win with Rodriguez. (OSUBeavers.com)
Washington vs. Stanford, Sacramento State, San Jose State @ Stanford: Stanford 196.65, Washington 194.075, Sacramento State 193.225, San Jose State 192.8. Stanford freshman Ashley Morgan won her first NCAA all-around title, besting senior teammate Carly Janiga 39.45-39.1. Eastern Michigan vs. Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Michigan State @ Western Michigan (Michigan Classic): Central Michigan 194.975, Michigan State 194.55, Eastern Michigan 191.25, Western Michigan 190.875. Who's the best gymnastics team in Michigan? Central Michigan, apparently. CMU gymnasts not only won the team title at this battle of Michigan schools, they captured three of four event titles, with Kristen Teubner winning vault (9.875) and tying for first on floor with Western Michigan's Kristine Garbarino (9.875). CMU's Katie Simon beam (9.8) and was one of only two gymnasts to break 39 in the all-around, winning the overall title with 39.175. Michigan State's Rochelle Robinson won bars (9.8). (EMUEagles.com)
Boise State vs. Cal State Fullerton @ Cal State Fullerton: Boise State 193.7, Cal State Fullerton 191.25. Boise State junior Hannah Redmon continues to be the Broncos's beacon. This week, she won vault (9.9), bars (9.85), floor (9.9).
