Nathan Gafuik wins Elite Canada

2008 Olympian Nathan Gafuik overcame mistakes on floor and vault to win the Elite Canada meet, held this past weekend in Alymer, Quebec.

Gafuik, 24, led 2004 Olympian Ken Ikeda and Hugh Smith after the first day of competition. During Sunday's finals, Gafuik posted the highest total score as well as the best scores on high bar (15.25) and rings (14.35).

Gafuik, who helped the Canadian men to an ninth place finish in the team competition in Beijing, told Gymnastics Canada after the meet that he was easing back into competition following the 2009 World Championships.

On day two, Gafuik also scored a 15.05 on vault, 11.7 on pommel horse, 13.05 on floor and 14.8 on parallel bars.

"I think I was a little tired today and that caused some of my problems, but still it was a good meet for me," Gafuik said.

Canadian team veteran Ikeda posted the top scores on parallel bars (15.0) and pommel horse (14.35), to finish behind Gafuik. Smith of Halifax, Nova Scotia, finished third all-around and won vault (15.5).

2009 World team member Kevin Lytwyn, fourth, had the highest all-around total on the second day (84.8), despite recording 11.25 on pommel horse, which was up from 9.1 on day one.

British Columbia's Jason Scott finished fifth, followed by Anderson Loran, who had the highest score on floor (14.8).

Richmond, B.C.'s Robert Watson won the junior Elite Canada title over Tariq Dowers and Jaylan Birl.

Elite Canada is regarded as a sort of Winter National Championship in the same vein as men's Winter Cup in the U.S. Ontario's Dominique Pegg won the women's Elite Canada title in December.
