The Japanese men's and women's teams cleaned up at this weekend's Toyota Cup, capturing six of the 10 gold medals available at the competition in Toyota City, Japan.
2009 World all-around bronze medalist Koko Tsurumi won the women's title on uneven bars (15.1) and placed second on floor (14.2) behind teammate Kyoko Oshima (14.275). Their countrywoman Yuko Shintake defeated World beam champion Deng Linlin for the beam gold (14.125-13.9), with vault champion Ekaterina Kurbatova of Russia third (13.875).
Kurbatova won vault over South Korea's Hyun Jo Joo (13.75) and Poland's Katarzyna Jurkowska (13.162). Oshima, the only other gymnast in the vault final, averaged 12.525.
Kytra Hunter of the U.S. placed third on floor (14.15), while teammate Mackenzie Caquatto was second on uneven bars (14.675) ahead of Australian Larrissa Miller (14.65), who made event finals on bars at the 2009 World Championships. Kurbatova was fourth on bars (14.625), followed by her teammate and 2007 World uneven bars champion Ksenia Semyonova (14.3).
Caquatto had problems on beam (12.275) and floor (12.1) on the second day of competition, finishing 12th and 11th, respectively. Hunter also placed ninth on bars (14.050).
The Japanese men split the event titles with competitors from China. 2009 World champions Yang Mingyong, Zhang Hongtao and Wang Guanyin won gold on rings (15.9), pommel horse (16.25) and parallel bars (16.225), while World all-around champion Kohei Uchimura won floor (15.6) and placed second on high bar (14.225). Japan's Eiichi Sekiguchi (16.325) won vault over teammate Makoto Okiguchi (16.1), and Takuya Nakase captured the high bar title (15.775).
Okiguchi, a floor finalist at the 2009 Worlds, also took bronze on floor (15.25). Kazuhito Tanaka of Japan was a distant second to Wang on parallel bars (15.675), followed by Adam Kierzkowski of Poland (15.225).
Other men's medalists were Germany's Matthias Fahrig, who was second on floor (15.325), Marek Lyszczarz of Poland, third on vault (15.787 average) and Russia's Konstantin Pluzhnikov and South Korea's Won Yul Choo, second and third on rings (15.525 and 15.375, respectively).
American Tim Gentry placed sixth on floor, seventh on vault and eighth on rings. Teammate Alex Buscaglia was seventh on floor and high bar, and 10th on parallel bars.
2009 World pommel horse bronze medalist Prashanth Sellathurai placed second on that event (15.9), defeating Hungary's Kristian Berki (15.4). Philippe Rizzo gave the Australians their third medal of the championships, earning bronze on high bar (14.4).
