Call to ban so-called 'assault weapons' has already begun

Earlier today, my colleague, David Codrea, asked "Will Alabama shooter bring 'assault weapon' ban to the front burner?" If the biggest cheerleaders for forcible citizen disarmament have their way, that will certainly be the case.

Following yesterday's assault weapon rampage shooting in Alabama leaving 11 dead including the shooter, America's leading national gun violence prevention organizations -- Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Freedom States Alliance, Legal Community Against Violence, and Violence Policy Center -- issued the following joint statement: "Our sympathies go to all those affected by this terrible tragedy. "The guns used in yesterday's rampage shooting across Alabama -- a Bushmaster AR-15-style assault rifle and an SKS assault rifle -- are military-bred firearms developed for the specific purpose of killing human beings quickly and efficiently. Yesterday's shooting is only the latest addition to a string of preventable tragedies committed with these military-style weapons. America needs an effective federal assault weapons ban to stop the mass production and marketing by the gun industry of these anti-personnel weapons."

Left unsaid, of course, is the fact that the SKS rifle was never banned by the expired federal AWB, and that Bushmaster had several AR-15 variants designed to be in full compliance with the federal law, with the Violence Policy Center explicitly singling out Bushmaster as "the Poster Child of How the Gun Industry Evades the Law" (pdf file). "Evades the law," by the way, is citizen disarmament lobby-speak for "complies with the law."

I wrote recently about the vulture-like opportunism of the anti-gun groups, and they certainly didn't take long. I'll have more tomorrow. I have already mentioned National Gun Rights Examiner David Codrea's article about the Alabama atrocity--see also what my colleagues in Denver, Los Angeles, and Seattle have to say about it.

Oh--one more thing:

"It looked like he was trying to kill us. There's no doubt about it," Lindsey said. "We were face-to-face with him. He just put the weapon out the window and let go a burst."

Lindsey said his bulletproof vest saved his life. "The vest comes in play, I promise you," he said with a nervous laugh.

Aren't we incessantly told that one of the justifications for banning "assault weapons" is their supposed ability to penetrate police body armor?

Michelle, I think he was expressing agreement with my dubbing the folks who claim to represent "gun control" as the "forcible citizen disarmament lobby"--he definitely wasn't saying they're right.

Nothing brings as much joy to the Bradys, VPC, et. al. as swimming in the blood of innocent people. If there were not monsters out there who would do these things, they would do so themselves, hire it done, or manipulate others to do such.

These are the true monsters because they are not insane. Just evil.

Go Second Amendment! Make firearms illegal and only the criminals will have them.

I don't understand why the Government can't go more in depth on gun safety. There's no reason to ban them.

    Hey cloud9
It's spelled martial law. Not marshall.

I promise you an SKS, especially at close range, will penetrate body armor. Same with an AR. So the cop was obviously not hit with either.

IIIA body armor with chicken plates WILL stop 5.56NATO and 7.62x39 IF hit in the chicken plates.

The real question is why nobody much shot back at this fellow. Was he from a liberal anti-gun family? If my kin looked to be about to shoot my other kin I'd draw on the menacing one in a heartbeat.
