New York Daily News uses insulting snobbery to push citizen disarmament

I rarely pay attention to the squealing, indignant rants that define Michael Daly of the New York Daily News. His paper is notoriously hostile to the right to keep and bear arms, and Daly typifies the stereotype defined so well in Julia Gorin's brilliant classic, "The anti-gun male":

In short, he is a man begging for subjugation. He longs for its promise of equality in helplessness. Because only when that strange, independent alpha breed of male is helpless along with him will he feel adequate.

So I'm not going to waste my time rebutting his latest foot-stamping tantrum against South Carolina's decision to suspend sales taxes on firearms this Thanksgiving weekend. Instead, I want to point out a few ways Daly and his paper insult not just gun owners, and not just Southerners, but everyone who might have a different viewpoint.

It's a Yankeecentric [see controversy in "Comments"] thing: they're just too narrow-minded to realize how ignorant and provincial their superiority delusion is.

Let's take a look at his headline:

South Carolina shoots holes in gun battle by peddling tax-free weapons for Black Friday

OK, cheesy and slanted, sure, but it's kind of punchy. I'll admit grudgingly it works as a title. But that's not what caught my eye.

Look at the url:

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/2009/11/24/2009-11-24_dixie_dopes_shoot_holes_in_gun_battle.html

"Dixie Dopes"? Is that what they think?

Of course it is. If you look at their columnists page, they don't even try to hide their contempt:

Daly: South Carolina dopes shoot holes in gun battle

The correct term for these insulting snobs is "bigot."  And yes, I expect some of you will correct me on this in "comments."

And then there is their poll:

The gun battle

What's the best way for New York City to reduce gun violence?
Stricter gun laws.
More cops on the streets.
Both of the above.
Not sure. But emulating South Carolina wouldn't be a good start.

Divergent viewpoints need not apply. Besides, they'd just be dopey anyway.

Ignorant, smarmy and arrogant. Typical Daily News. Typical Daly. Typical "Authorized Journalists."

So is there a point to this?

Only to say that creatures such as these will never stop promoting the destruction of our right to keep and bear arms. There can be no compromise with them because they'll never stop, so long as other, rougher men in the service of the state are willing to enforce their demands at gunpoint...

Men who, while misguided and at times willfully corrupted by power, at least don't wear these.

Unlike some at a certain New York birdcage liner.

Gun control only helps those who obtain guns illegally. Then they know the people are rendered defenseless.

"This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!" - Adolph Hitler, 1935, on The Weapons Act of Nazi Germany

CL, that Hitler quote has been widely discredited as bogus. Don't know about the Lenin one.

I can't believe that fake Hitler quote refuses to die...

What IS true is that the Gun Control Act of 1968 DID copy the 1938 Nazi Gun Control in structure and effect.

I think the Lenin quote is real though... can't find anything to discredit it with a quick search.

The person who said that isn't really important. Hitler probably thought it anyway... and it's the thought that counts, isn't it?

New Yorkers can call me any names they like. I won't change my mind because I am right. They are wrong. I have always liked guns, but many years ago I did go through a phase where I wondered "what if the gun control advocates are right?" So I did research. I tried to find credible evidence for their side. I carefully thought through everything I could find. I came out the other side absolutely convinced that they are wrong and their advocacy is evil and destructive to human life.... and that most of the loudest disarmament advocates *know* it.

Of course they know it Kent, the maxim here is this: No man needs another helpless unless he has evil plans for that other.

There is nothing more contemptible in this world to me than a willing slave. Someone who is of such low self esteem that they foolishly, and worst willingly, believe that security is ONLY assured by relinquishing all personal rights and responsibility to a governing body much like a dog that immediately rolls on it's back in submission when approached by a bigger dog with a louder bark, and I like dogs. I think it's called being whipped.

Self loathing primates like Michael Daly make me wish there is actually something to the apocalyptic predictions surrounding December 21, 2012. This way we can separate the wheat from the chaff with regard to the gene pool when the dust settles.

And yet these bigoted elitist girly-men like Michael Daly would be the loudest to squeal when robbed by an armed goblin, and would berate you for not defending him.

I'm going to have to develop a Q & A for when & if I see and stopp an armed robbery in progress: Something like this:
    "Sir/m'am, are you ok?"
"Do you have a gun to defend yourself with?"
"Do you believe in gun control?"

If the answer to the last is "No", then I stop the goblin & save the day.

If the answer to the last is "Yes", then I step back and let the goblin finish his job. I'd step in AFTER it's over to take the poor schlub home or to the hospital. Why? #1, why tip my hand to an avowed enemy, who would probably come after me for having a gun, even though I'd used it to save him. #2, if the rob-ee (self-imposed victim) doesn't have a gun BY NOW, it's about time he got a wake-up to defend himself & not depend on others for what he can do for himself.

There is one NYPD officer for every 218 residents of the city. That is outstanding--my town has less than half that coverage. The NYPD has an annual budget of almost 4 billion. The police may arrest any armed person, demand he produce a legitimate permit, and prosecute if he cannot. There is no legal requirement to issue permits, and the system has been in place for 98 years. Gun dealers must also comply with ballistic sample legislation.

New York City has everything it ever wanted in terms of police power and disarmament law. Disarmament has had a century of failure in New York City, and the members of the disarmament cult are unwilling to admit it. What does Daly want, another century of wasted effort and money, just to make sure the entire first century was a fluke?

Disarmers like Daly will /always/ have an excuse; they'll always find someone else to blame. We've seen 100 years of stagnation and excuse-making. We need progress, and they have to stop blaming objects for behavio

New Hampshireman wrote (and I really do understand and sympathize with your point of view): "Sir, no disrespect intended but, New Yorkers are not Yankees!" That entire topic of discussion swings wildly depending upon where the speaker is standing. I've stood mostly in Florida and Virginia for most of my 81 years, and from my vantage point anyone on the other side of the Potomac River and beyond is a stone Yankee. Many of ya'll are tame by now, and we do love you. ;-)

    New Hampshireman,

History shows that any resident of a union state (north of Maryland) in the Civil War was referred to as a Yankee. If you live in New York you're a Yankee. As a former New Yorker and 'North Easterner' I know most everyone there is aware of this. They may not alway like it, but they know it. The Yankees baseball team didn't do too badly this year :)

Me, I like E.B. White's definition. Google his name with the word Yankee.

A humorous aphorism attributed to E.B. White summarizes these distinctions:

To foreigners, a Yankee is an American.
To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner.
To Northerners, a Yankee is an Easterner.
To Easterners, a Yankee is a New Englander.
To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter.
And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.

A Yankee is someone who is always on the watch for other folks' mistakes (as he sees them) so that he can step in and "fix" the matter - for your own good. He knows better than you what is good for you. He is always right and even when he's wrong - he's right. He is an eternal busybody with opinions on everything even when he hasn't a clue about the subject. He sets the rules that YOU must follow while he is exempt - and he will fight to YOUR death for your right to do as he says. He is an "elitist" - officious, pompous, self-righteous and superior. He is a purveyor and practitioner of Political Correctness by which ALL actions and even thoughts must be judged. He believes that TRUE liberty can only exist within the concept of total obedience to the State - as long as HE runs the State. In short, he (or she) is a LIBERAL.
