Jersey City police chief blames pump-action shotguns

Courtesy Oleg Volk, A Human Right

Jersey City Police Chief Thomas Comey could not make it more clear. Pump action shotguns are "assault weapons."

"This weapon is manufactured for nothing other than to hunt man."

See for yourself:

Left unsaid is why he considers weapons "manufactured for nothing other than to hunt man" suitable for police work:

"It's used as part of a tactical equipment for law enforcement agencies in this country."

Translation: We're the "Only Ones" who should have pump-action shotguns. You cannot.

Why? Because:

"It's in the hands of someone who's already been convicted of certain persons not to possess a firearm."

What?

But OK, let's assume we understand what he just said. And:

He said that authorities traced the gun's serial number and were reasonably certain that at some point the weapon was purchased legally in the South.

Aren't all guns manufactured by a firearms company legally owned at "at some point"? Seeing as how ATF's last released Firearms Trace Data report for New Jersey places "time to crime rates for firearms with a New Jersey recovery" at 12.38 years (over two years longer than the national average of 10.33 years), the only conclusion we can reach is Chief Comey doesn't want anyone who is not working for law enforcement to have any guns ever.

His absurd blaming of guns that "take lives" and "threaten police officers" instead of blaming criminal individuals demonstrates that. As does his failure to relate New Jersey's already draconian gun laws, where:

[I]t is unlawful to knowingly possess any rifle or shotgun without having first obtained a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (FID)...

You see what's going on here.

But wait! He said "tactical shotguns."

Functionally they are no different from any other pump-action shotgun. Sure, they can have convenience or cosmetic features: rails for a sight or light, special grips and stocks, shell holders, heat shields to keep you from burning your hand...

The barrel of guns sold in the "civilian" market can't be any shorter than "legal" length without being registered with and taxed by ATF, and you load the next shell into the chamber by racking the slide, just like with any other pump-action shotgun. And you can load bird shot, buck shot, slugs...just like any other shotgun.

"Somebody's gotta wake up and smell the coffee and say 'enough is enough.'"

That would be people like me, chief. We have. Enough is enough and we will not disarm. Believe it.

And you asleep-at-the-switch "sportsmen" who haven't come to the realization yet that you're also on the menu, take note.

One more point I couldn't help notice: The "authorized journalists" at MyFoxNY.com took it on themselves to edit the chief's mangling of the language:

"We should stop being afraid of the NRA and start being afraid [for] our own rights," Comey said.

That's not what he said. Listen carefully to the video.

Interesting Freudian slip, don't you think?

David, I know you aren't guilty of it, but this story just highlights another problem endemic to the pro-gun movement. WAY too many pro-gun folks are too deferential to the police. You watch, we'll have people making excuses for this jack-booted thug, and trying to explain away his tyrannical little rant.

This guy needs to be stopped cold. Now, me, I'd go for suing him under the federal civil rights statutes, for "conspiracy to deprive civil rights under color of law". Though I guess we have to get state incorporation first... I can hardly wait.

Guys like him just disgust me. He was hired to SERVE AND PROTECT, damnit. Every street cop I've ever talked to understands damn good and well the difference between a thug and a citizen, and WANTS the good guys to have guns to protect themselves. Just too much of the leadership somehow forgets that, or more likely were "Men Who Would Be Kings" in the first place.

I'm not "afraid of our own rights" "I'm afraid FOR my rights" with asshats like this guy out there anywhere near a position of power.

Ya know, thinking about it the leftist control freaks ARE afraid of our rights, it's why they want guns removed from the folks who obey "laws" they want a "fairness doctrine" so that we who oppose tyranny can't speak against them, religion because THEY expect to be prayed to instead of for.

The idea that somehow they've more important than we the people because a small percent of us that bother to vote has put there where they are (overlooking the massive fraud in the system) is sickening, if not signs of some kind of mental illness.

These people enable killers. Under the laws they are just as guilty as the persons wielding the weapons against them and society due to their demands that only a very tiny fraction of the populace can be trusted to do the right thing and confront criminals.

Jersey City must be so proud to have this stooge bloviate on matters that are obviously far too deep for him to grasp.

How this particular mental midget managed to rise to the top job in that city might make a great horror story. I figure he must be some "important" persons' ne'er-do-well relative, who was previously unemployable at whatever menial job he held prior to this appointment.

This is one case where I think it would be an absolute waste of time emailing a response. If, by some miracle, this mouth-breather can actually read, I am sure he cannot comprehend.

Sleep tight, Jersey City. This guy has your back.

You guys are absolutely right - they are TERRIFIED of us. Of ANY freedom loving, self sufficient citizen, who is smart enough to see through their schemes. Don't kid yourselves, either, the worst of them will lie, cheat, steal, and KILL to enforce their vision & power.

Don't sell the people short, though. Somebody mentioned low voter participation. I've never agreed that's apathy. Don't think that at all - I think at least some of it is outrage, and a growing determination that "no matter who you vote for, the government gets elected", as libertarians put it.

LOTS of people are fed up... but, remember

"Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed."

When The People decide, it will be time.

The 1A was meant for proper English, and quill pens..... At no point does the constitution mention ANYTHING about talking into microphones to mass media outlets, or the internet.............
At one point the words were put together from statment made legally and reassembled to become evil in nature..............."

Curt - as I alluded to in my first post on this thread, there IS something already in the law that applies.

USC 42.1983 Civil action for deprivation of rights

    www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode42/usc_sec_42_00001983----000-.html

    USC 18.241 Conspiracy against rights

    www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/usc_sec_18_00000241----000-.html

USC 18.242 Deprivation of rights under color of law

    www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/usc_sec_18_00000242----000-.html

The latter two statutes are not as useful, though far more interesting, really, as they carry stiff criminal penalties. But you have to get a prosecutor to indict first. 1983 cases, though, are civil actions, which says they can be initiated by us chickens. Why do you think the hoplophobes are screaming so loud at the notion of incorporation? We get RKBA finally legally recognized, and within fairly broad limits we CAN shut these jerks down COLD.

With some after thought and reflection, I hope nobody took my comment, which was meant to illuminate the tagging of words like "assault weapons", into meaning anything more than a tongue in cheek approach to illuminate the Antis ability/attempt to twist the way the 2A reads and is often interpretated by people that want to claim the time period for in which it was written. (it was about muskets and muzzleloaders)
I apologize if this was the case.

MamaL, are we related? I have been waiting for the laggards also, for a very long time. When I was younger I was certain I would see it in my lifetime. Now, not so much. It seems the character of the nation has deteriorated faster than its liberties, thus enabling the killers of liberty and the citizen to flourish.

When we were young this man would have been publicly and universally scorned, now he holds high office. If we are to change what we will become, we must first change what we are.

I don't hope much anymore. Once surrendered, guts and honor are almost impossible to reachieve. It's just too damn easy to be a coward.

However, it is impossible for an honorable man to be one, especially when he realizes there are worse things than death. Slavery being only one of them.

He was correct by accident. High-capacity, 12-gauge pump guns were used extensively in WW1 for trench raids (known as "trench guns"); even had bayonet lugs. In the '40s they were handed to GIs who were tending to prisoners, and the guards as well as the guns were called "prisoner chasers."

"It's a Mossberg weapon, used for tactical entries by us..."

I love how Mossberg 500s have been around for years, yet, suddenly, the police acquire a few with pistol grips and it becomes a tactical assault weapon that the general populace isn't permitted to use. So because the police adapt something, it means everyone else can't use it? Does that apply to other things as well, such as cars? Because I would have no problem taking all Crown Vics off the road all over the country.

What you have here is a combination of inadequate training, a cocky attitude and overconfidence, this is why some Police in that part of the U.S. do not do well even when coming up against someone with no training.
I am able to say this since in the past I have known some LEO's that are in that area, there are some that are not qualified to be on the force. Just take a look at the stupid statements that the head of the Jersey City Police Force makes, he got the job not because he's qualified, but because he's in with the Politicians.

    Just look at the transition

Granddads pump shotgun=Evil pump shotgun=assault weapon

Personally I’m sick and tired of the disqualifiers. We now have laws on the books that disqualify people for things that weren’t even around in 1968.

I’ve said it before and I’m saying again, NRA compromise and concession have brought us down this path and it’s got to stop.

As a paramedic I have witnessed many such irrational outbursts by family members of people who have died tragically. I believe we are seeing the same dynamic here. His language is jumbled like that of someone in a state of panic. Though it is unfortunate that he is abusing his power (political campaigning while on duty) and speaking as a position of influence, we should be mindful that he is not thinking rationally, much like a mourning family member, at the time of this filming.
