Civil Liberties Examiner JD. Tuccille has weighed in on attorney general nominee Eric Holder's disregard for the Sixth Amendment:
The right to counsel is key to a fair trial, since it allows defendants to seek legal advice and wage the best defense possible against the impressive resources fielded by government prosecutors. But as deputy attorney general in 1999, Holder penned a memo regarding the prosecution of corporations that threatened companies with dire consequences if they helped their employees wage a defense -- or even kept them on the payroll. All this, remember, while the trial is being waged, before anybody has been convicted of a crime.
I've done what I can, both here and at The War on Guns, to alert readers to the danger of an attorney general who opposes private gun ownership. In the past week, we've explored:
Why Holder is a danger to gun owners
Why Holder is a danger to non-gun owners
Immediate and simple action YOU can take to oppose Holder's confirmation
Holder's scary position on your right to a legal defense
Just remember:
Ignoring the fact that the Republicans fielded a poor gun rights candidate, the Brady Campaign is now crowing that this issue is a political loser. Confident they are on a roll, they've sent the Obama team their wish list of infringements on your right to keep and bear arms. That it tracks with his stated intentions is no coincidence.
Author Alan Korwin warns us that "the Democrats have already leaked a gun-ban list." It includes "Rifles (or copies or duplicates...Pistols (or copies or duplicates)...Shotguns (or copies or duplicates)[and a] Catch-all category (for anything missed or new designs). Importantly, Mr. Korwin notes:
Attorney General gets carte blanche to ban guns at will:
Under the proposal, the U.S. Attorney General can add any “semiautomatic rifle or shotgun originally designed for military or law enforcement use, or a firearm based on the design of such a firearm, that is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, as determined by the Attorney General.” Note that Obama’s pick for this office (Eric Holder, confirmation hearing set for Jan. 15) wrote a brief in the Heller case supporting the position that you have no right to have a working firearm in your own home.
And in related, developing news, author and television producer Michael Bane warns:
Sources from Washington are telling me that President-Elect Obama may move forward on an Assault Weapons/Magazine Capacity Ban ASAP — maybe as soon as later this January.
This is echoed, Bane reports, by Jim Shepherd at the SHOOTING WIRE:
Despite the new administration's insistence that jobs and the economy will be the top priority beginning January 20, insiders say payback to the NRA and other pro-Second Amendment groups is high on the agenda. Democratic advisors say the Republican party is "disorganized, disheartened, and dissolving" and it's a good time for the incoming administration to take them on in a core issue - the assault weapons ban is one of three topics they're evaluating.
We all saw "The Terminator," right?
"He said there's a storm coming in."
"I know."
We see it approaching, and we see an opportunity to set its advance temporarily back while we scramble to prepare for the onslaught. It's now up to you if you will do anything about it, and if so, what.

Comments
all firearms were originally designed for military or law enforcement use.
all of them.
"Sporting purposes", which is NOT what the Second Amendment protects, includes hunting vermin. "Military style" weaponry is the best suited for that.
can't have it both ways
United States vs. Miller
The US vs. Miller has long been used by the gun control crowd as proof of the Second Amendment not being an individual right. In fact, the Supreme Court said no such thing. The ruling said that they had no proof that a sawed off shotgun was a militia weapon.
If this happens there will be some huge problems and my gut feeling tells me that some good men will get smoked. That could create a new Alamo which could be the start to the end of this country being a 50 state nation. The new law that goes into effect Feb. 10th to destroy the industry of used childrens toys, books and choths is going to have a lot of problems and will generate hate to government not seen in any living person today in their lifetime.
People are getting the clue that the people who are screwing up this country are the people back in
Washington DC. Let them seal the deal for themselves. The sad thing is a lot of lives will be destoryed before things are brough under control.
Change we can all live without.
I for one am sick of treating the gun grabbers like sadly mistaken individuals. I am tired of being referenced as a member of the "powerful gun lobby" or a possum eating redneck or a constitution nutcase, depending upon which militant liberal dunce is speaking. All of us have been far too nice to these idiots. It's past time to start treating them like the enemies they are. These people obviously do not care if you and yours are victimized and/or killed by some predator (animal or human). They believe that you should just endure whatever the bad guy has in mind for you and then let the police investigate the crime scene and tote the lifeless bodies of you and/or your children to the morgue. Anybody who would deign to use lawful, righteous force to defend himself is considered by these tunnel-visioned dung beetles as worse than the jackass who attacks him.
According to figures quoted elsewhere, those of us who own firearms number somewhere close to 85 million people. We outnumber these rabid idiots who would take our firearms. But, we cant afford to wait until Obama, Holder, and their ilk make the first moves. Ive been hearing about conflicts between Prags and Three Percenters a lot lately. Ive read negative comments by gun owners on gun blogs about people who exercise the right to open carry. Ive seen comments made by gun owners who side with the government on banning automatic weapons and .50 caliber rifles. All of us had better bridge the gaps and support one another. Realize there is no such thing as a reasonable restriction on your unalienable Constitutionally protected rights. That goes for the man with the .50 caliber Barrett as well as for the individual with the Ruger 10-22. It was said several years ago that the American farmers would be the most overwhelming political body in the country, but no two farmers could ever agree on anything. The same quote will be placed on our tombstones if we dont mend our bridges and pull together.
The Obamamama will in the very near future stand before an assembled congress and declare war on American citizens. The collective idiots in Washington DC haven't been able to win the war for the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese or the Iraqis or, for that matter, unreconstructed Confederate citizens. They can't win the war on drugs or terrorism. They will not win the war on guns! But, there will be casualties.
WWW, I can get behind that. But they have to come my way. I am not going to bridge the gap to people who want to accept "reasonable" infringements. They are just as much the enemy as those who would deny all freedom.
So, if the gap is to be bridged they need to join me and claim their liberty and rights. I will surrender mine to join them.
that should read I will NOT surrender mine to join them.
It will be a sad state of affairs if all the brave soldiers in the not so distant past, who fought and died for our rights under the Constitution, are slapped in the face with this crap! What an insult, young men sacrificed their lives for us to allow the government to take away our 2nd and 6th amendment rights? Stand up America! I won't go down without a fight! I have written my letters! Everyone who reads this make sure you write yours, and let the powers that be, know we mean business! LEAVE OUR RIGHTS ALONE!
I am woman who thinks, "If I want to own a shotgun, then dammit, I want to own a shot gun." Thanks for taking your courageous stance. And "Jon" below please, cite your assertion that all guns were made for military and law enforcement.
We need to do everythine we can to keep our gun rights. Whatever we can do to help, wright your congresman, senators and anyone else . We need to be heard loud and clear.
I appreciate the effort-and Im all for the peaceful solution...but in the end...this place is just a brief stop b4 I get where Im going....Most Americans are freakin traitors anyway...too hell with them
Gun control is not about guns it is about control.
Every year we are confronted with this gun control anti constitutional garbage being thrown at us. And even forced upon us.
Every year we move closer to a socialistic goverment and more laws designed to force you into it.
These preditors who destroy the constitution that is designed to protect the common person have only one thing in mind,(dissarm the people and enslave them).
In my mind I am asking, how long are the law abiding people who want to own guns so they can protect their families and themselves going to put up with a goverment that only wants to force its ideals on them.
The terrible thing about it is that it has gone this far. Year after year it gets worse and harder to deal with.
Things you need to consider are the dissorganisation of the constitutional majority. There are more than enough gun owners and law abiding citzens in this country to put a stop to this rip off but they cannot get organized.
The goverment quite well understands that and uses it against us.
The fact is,is that I wonder if the people can stand against a goverment assult? All the goverment has to do is to seperate and take out the individual groups and the rest of the country will stand back a chear as the media justifies the assult while conducting a witch hunt for the next poor unorganized group who dares to dissagree with them.
You can gripe and complain all you want, but by yourself you cannot stand against the onslaught on your rights.
There is a real need to organize and plan a responce that will put an end to this lawless and Godless goverment.
9 days until Barrack Hussein Obama is sworn in as the next president and he swears an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America, and to SECURE THE RIGHTS of American citizens, not usurp them. Should he, or men in Congress, violate that oath, they will no longer hold the authority granted them BY the Constitution, and it will be incumbent upon the PEOPLE to throw off the shackles of tyranny and institute a new form of government to secure those rights. "Shall not be infringed."
