Harry Reid ignores gun rights questionnaire

We've seen that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is vulnerable to losing his seat in the 2010 election. And we've seen several of his challengers--six to date--give us answers to some specific questions about the right to keep and bear arms.

A contestant who has not responded, though he was approached over a month ago, is Mr. Reid himself. From his website contact form (click on graphic to enlarge):

Arguably, Sen. Reid gets a lot more emails than other candidates, and probably never saw this because a staffer intercepted it. Just to be fair, I'll send them a link to this column and give them another chance to respond to or ignore the questions.

Perhaps they feel they don't have to, because Sen. Reid enjoys the support of NRA--Executive VP Wayne La Pierre calls hims "a true champion of the Second Amendment"--in spite of Reid supporting "the most anti-gun president in American history" and in spite of his votes to confirm both Eric "Ban 'assault weapons' to fight Mexican crime" Holder and Sonia "The Second Amendment does not apply to the states" Sotomayor.

Come to think of it, after delaying entering the Sotomayor fray, NRA finally announced they'd score a confirmation vote against candidates.

Will they make good on that with Sen. Reid in any meaningful way?

How?

I'd like to think and hope that Reid would be tossed in 2010 even if he were the most pro-gun senator in Rome. He, Pelosi, Boxer, Waters and Obama need to be voted out at the earliest possible opportunity.

I sent one to Mark Schauer who is running for a congressional seat in Michigan. He has not answered either.

How is Obama the "the most anti-gun president in American history"? He's a politician playing to an anti-gun base, he hasn't *yet* pursued any legislation. As of right now, that would likely be Bill Clinton, or possibly Nixon with the GCA. Theoretical legislation might include a new "assault weapons ban", putting him right near Bill Clinton. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an Obama supporter by any means - but to assert he's the most "anti-gun president" is a fallacy, unless we're going by what we assume the President might do, and completely ignore the actions of previous presidents who acted against firearm rights. I suppose, by this reasoning, he's the most "anti-war" president in history (maybe that explains the whole Peace Prize). Who is it useful for to push propaganda around like this?

This is all a minor point, but it concerns me to read baseless rhetoric. Once started it's not difficult to shift the target from Obama to other groups: Bolsheviks, Jews, the Irish, people of color

Fidelity--note I put that phrase in quotes--look at the sponsor of the site those words link to. While I believe Obama would have no problem meeting that bar if given the chance, the point here was to quote NRA rhetoric and juxtapose it against their support for politicians who supported the guy THEY characterize that way...Reid, Baucus, Gillibrand...

"True champion[s] of the Second Amendment" do NOT support anti-gunners.

If I were Reid, I'd probably be practicing my ability to Take The Fifth as well.

David another fine editorial as usual.

    David of all of the examiner writers you’re the one with contacts that could pull this off;

How about encouraging the local pro-gun groups to start a grass roots campaign against Harry Reid and get behind one 2A candidate?

With the large number of opponents competing against Reid there’s a chance for an upset in the primary but its going to take someone planting the seed by making contact with the local gun groups in Nevada.

The NRA has played their bait and switch game long enough I say screw them. The only reason they said anything about Sotomayor was because their members got upset

The NRA is the biggest gun control group we have.

That's a rather interesting little slander you made there, Taz. David Codrea is one of the most honourable men in the gun debate I've seen.

The questions he asks are legitimate. If someone is unscrupulous enough to use criminal misuse of guns as an excuse to eliminate proper use, they have no business being in power. Simple as that.

I've never seen him make threats or claim association with terrorists, as you claim. If you're claiming such, you better have some damn good evidence to prove you're not going the way of the anti and just talking garbage.

Gareth A, thanks, but when I see a comment poster who has no interest in an intelligent discussion about the column topic but just wants to insult and lie, I just delete him--I'm under no obligation to provide a forum for trolls. If Taz doesn't like that, he's free to email me, but I don't believe he will.

Nothing to see here--Back to the discussion on the Reid questionnaire, please...

Madashell, I've been working throughout with Gun Owners of Nevada--so far we've received six responses, with three that have been deemed really good by the readership here. There are a few more questionnaires still outstanding. And while early polls can be misleading, we're dealing with some folks who have out-polled Reid at this early date. Here's the thing--if we can give NV gun owners 3 or more good candidates for the primaries, they can then vote based on which one best represents them on other issues--and if one of these candidates wins the primary, they'll be able to unify behind a challenger to Reid.

Please note I do not presume to speak for GONV. Right now we are working together to get the candidates to define their positions. They'll be doing their own talking as the primaries and general election near.

after the citizens of nevada "retire" harry he needs to be sent to a place where he isn't allowed to own a gun; of course, he can always look up at the guard tower, or the guard station at the cellblock exit and see theirs!
