Gunning for Jon & Kate Plus 8

Kate Gosselin dries her eyes during her interview on the NBC "Today" television program in New York Monday, Aug. 10, 2009. Gosselin said her marriage to Jon would have failed whether it played out in the glare of a TV reality show or not. (AP Photo/Richard Drew)

The People TV Watch article could not have been more gushing on the exhibitionist Gosselin family saga, further endearing its readers to a show that provides a psychic fix to televoyeurs throughout the land:

It wasn’t long, however, until she started the “transformation from heels to boots,” and showed off a new pink cowboy hat. After taking a spin on ATVs, learning to ride a horse named Banjo, shooting a variety of guns at a firing range and taking her boys on a long hike to a lions’ den, Kate’s transformation was complete.

Considering the medium, we should expect such superficial actions being deemed a complete transformation. If only Saul of Tarsus had donned a pink cowboy hat on his way to Damascus...

I guess I should be grateful that a wildly popular television program chose to portray guns in a positive fashion, showing women in particular that shooting can be fun. After all, if we can get people to dip their toe in the pool, some may wade in and find they like it. And some of those may venture to deeper waters.

But the popularization and cultural preoccupation with trivial people and mere "entertainment," do not bode well for a nation that relies on a well educated and informed electorate to exercise responsible self government.

I touched on this in a Guns Magazine article from three years back:

"Americans know more about The Simpsons TV show than the US Constitution's First Amendment," the BBC News reported about a McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum poll.

And I reexamined that Republic-endangering ignorance a few months back:

This is the American electorate. These are the people who cancel and overwhelm your vote. And you'd better believe if asked they'll offer opinions on "gun control"--even though the vast majority would not be able to define what edicts exist already, nor articulate why, from the Framers' viewpoint, practically all would be considered infringements worth actively resisting.

It all goes back to something I call "The pH Factor." Google exact search terms "Patrick Henry," then do the same for "Paris Hilton," and compare the number of returns. Except I've developed a "pH Corollary," namely that if hits for "Perez Hilton" exceed those for Paris, cultural degeneracy will reach a point of no return.

But perhaps I'm not looking at this properly. Maybe instead of shaking my head in sadness and disbelief over an inheritance and hard-won legacy squandered, I should embrace the phenomenon...exploit it...

Maybe I should come up with a column on "The guns of Twilight"...

Or, if her show takes off, "Full auto Octomom"...

UPDATE: The video is here.  A whole lotta ignorance and bad attitude, not that that should surprise anyone...

It is always interesting that the media portrays women shooting guns as an empowerment activity, while they portray a man shooting guns as compensating for something. Also, they always portray guns as something you go to, like an amusment park and not as something that can be part of your daily life..

Here is an interesting article about how Rachel Maddow went shooting on her first date with her girlfriend. It's from an feminazi blog and the comments section is restricted to those with permission.

Many years ago, my girlfriend almost dropped me like a hot rock when she found out I was an NRA member. Her parents had taught her "those people" were to be avoided. 26 years of marriage and two kids later she loves going to the range with her .22 Browning pistol. The moral of the story? We have created a culture where "the range" is the place where big boys go to hide out and do some male bonding away from the missus. Wrong. People, of all persuasions, once exposed to positive firearms experiences, find it an activity that they enjoy, and one they will fight to keep enjoying. So, to all you men and women and "those inbetween", take your significant other, of whatever type, to the range for an afternoon of good fun. We can use all the help we can get.

Interesting how easily they justify the borderline-violent expression of Kate's anger. I guess female anger is more justified than male anger. I wonder what people would be saying if Jon was asking to hang pictures of Kate as targets...

something like 67% of americans cannot assert, for certain, that marx's ultimatum "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" cannot be found anywhere in the u.s. constitution.

My daughter loves Twilight. I fail to see what all the fuss is about.
More importantly, she loves to shoot and knows the Bill of Rights.
A little light stuff is ok, long as she grasps the reality/basics.
Besides, we talk about all this stuff.
Communication. So many leave the kids parked in front of the tv etc.

Who cares about the guns. Her driving recklessly is going to come back to bite her in the A## when the children start driving cars.

They are going to think it is fine to drive recklessly. She is showing poor example. Probably they will even have accidents on those four wheelers at their estate because both Jon and Kate drive recklessly around the property on them.

    Grow up parents.

I always drove cautiously making my children realize that it is important not to drive like a maniac.

Have to grow up, Jon and Kate, and stop showing off in front of the children zooming around in those tipsy four wheelers.

Even the Rancher told her to slow down, but she had no respect for him or his property.

I never cease to be amazed at how uneducated Americans really are about everything or that most are so lazy, they let the media tell them what to think and beleive. Then there are those who think they have all the answers by connecting dots tht portray an abstract mess of nothing, yet they find the story they are looking for. As with elections and politicians, this is certainly the case once again with the Jon and Kate saga. They are what we have created and allow them to be. Quit watching and commenting about matters none of us really know the truth about. Let them fade out into the sunset and work out their problems without our support. I can guarantee you that if we kick them out of homes homes and the media frenzy, they will respond to their problems in a much different way.... Show some restraint America!

If only there were some oragnization out actively working against this ignorance you have repeatedly written about. If there were some small, but rapidly growing, group out there waking people up and showing them that Patrick Henry and his contemporaries are actually MORE(?!?!) interesting and important than Paris Hilton and her contemporaries, now that would be something we could all agree with and get behind.
Turns out such a group does exist. It is right at the top of the Grass Roots Gun Rights Groups list on this page.
There have been several mentions of The Appleseed Project on this site, but I think a full article would tie in very well with today's story (What say you Mr. Codrea?)and maybe convince a few more people to come out and help us stem this rising tide of ignorance and apathy.
The best part about it, you get to go shooting WHILE you're learning important stuff about the value of liberty and our American heritage!

TW, I have indeed written about Appleseed, including posting their schedules, numerous times in this column and at my online journal, "The War on Guns: Notes from the Resistance." As for a full article, I was pleased to see the Appleseed table at an Indianapolis gun show I visited last January displaying my Guns Magazine article on their table. I can't post active links here, but if you paste findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_8_54/ai_n27506044/ into your browser address bar, you'll find my "Rights Watch" column from Aug. 2008, which covers the points you raise. When I mention the program I generally include that link--I'm not sure I have much more to say on the subject warranting a full new article without repeating myself, but I'm always receptive to receiving tips that would allow me to approach it from a fresh angle.

Thank you for the link Mr. Codrea. I was not aware of that article, having only become a daily reader of yours in the last six months. I greatly appreciate the exposure you provide for Appleseed and your efforts on behalf of us all with respect to gun rights.
My suggestion to you for a fresh angle is to follow up on a couple of the closing paragraphs of your article.
"'I've been to lots of shooting matches and clinics... But I've never been to one that placed so much emphasis on what it means to be a rifleman--and what being a rifleman has to do with being an American.'...
All this plants another seed in my mind: a similar effort to teach gun owners nationwide how to become proficient activists--but that's a topic for another day."
The marksmanship aspects of Appleseed are excellent, but the concepts above are what will really preserve the freedoms we enjoy for future generations. I'd be glad to go into more detail via e-mail vs. hijacking your comments page. rwvacar@gmail.com

Examiner.com has a special "Information 101" promotion they've been doing, and I and some of the other local GREs have already posted a few "Gun Rights 101" columns. I have plans to do some "activism" 101 posts in the near future. But I don't see that as an Appleseed article--they cover a Revolutionary War (and what it means to us) overview, but don't really-- as part of their organizational mission-- lend their name to a lot of the political, legal or social activism, and "Fred" designed it that way so as to keep participation barriers by people with a variety of backgrounds and beliefs to a minimum. Which I think is a wise course, by the way. They do their part to bring people in, and the rest of us provide our own pieces to the jigsaw puzzle.

We now return to our regularly scheduled Jon & Kate armed reality star commentary...

Kate was using her constitutional right to bear arms. She's more of a trooper than I gave her credit. The boys are so much fun to watch.

This is exactly what pulp culture was intended to do;increase the level of the "Ignorant Masses" . This is why we now have the
radical hijacking of our govt. by freedom hating control freaks the likes of BHO and his ilk!!!! This goes to the crux of your
point from your article "Tyranny Counting on Ignorance".
The tyrannical forces with their allies in Hollywood, the mainstream media, and pop culture now if they "dumb down" Americans with the misdirection of pulp culture, and then get their attention and support only for the short election cycles that occur in the US they can rely on the I M (Ignorant Masses} to keep them in power. They know they can tell them any lie they want and they won't check out the truth behind the issues. They know this class of people are of the Attention Deficit Disorder mindset and can't be bothered by such little problems as whether or not the latest proposal from the powers that be is a violation of our Constitution! This sets up a enviroment that is

I stopped watching tv several years ago. I actually don’t know who these people are and could care less.

I would rather have people spread this little tid bit to their email list

Larry Pratt recently attended a dinner, at that dinner Senator Coburn laid bare the NRA efforts to derail his parks amendment.

You read it correctly the NRA tried to derail pro-gun legislation introduced by one of the most pro-gun Senators in the US Senate in years.

That part starts around 7:00 minutes in. Please feel free to post and to distribute.

"But the popularization and cultural preoccupation with trivial people and mere "entertainment," do not bode well for a nation that relies on a well educated and informed electorate to exercise responsible self government."

It's too late. We already elect people on the basis of celebrity/popularity contests. Some of them actually come from the entertainment industry; others, like Obama and Bush, are just non-union actors. Rent Mike Judge's classic film "Idiocracy," in which America has dumbed down to the point of electing an illiterate, womanizing pro wrestler as President ("brought to you by Carl's Jr.").

@TW: "a similar effort to teach gun owners nationwide how to become proficient activists"

Isn't that what SAF's annual Gun Rights Policy Conference is all about?

When was Clinton a pro wrestler? But a previous comment was right on, Obama would make a great talking head for CNN and he already knows how to read a teleprompter with a straight face.
