"AT&T Shooting raises gun control questions on both sides," the WKTV headline tells us.
79-year-old Abraham Dickan walked into the store and opened fire with an illegal gun.
Illegality upon illegality...
So what's the answer?
Angelo Roefaro, New York State Coordinator for Mayors Against Illegal Guns "say[s] it could be an example of the loophole law. People cross state lines and buy guns with cash, no questions asked."
Uh...that's also illegal. And note "could be." Without facts, he's pulling that out of hi...thin air.
And then we have the "pro-gun" side:
The New York State Rifle and Pistol Association says loophole law or not, it's up to law enforcement to crack down on who is carrying the gun...
"There isn't a loophole," says Tom King, President of the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association. "It's not a gun issue, it's an enforcement issue."
Ah yes--the "enforce existing gun laws" mantra.
Even if obeying them could get you killed?
We do see one answer out of all this:
Both sides say Rome Police Officer Donald Moore should be commended for using his weapon the right way; stepping into the line of fire and shooting Dickan with his own .40 caliber handgun.
A gun used in defense can stop violence.
And what would have happened had the "Only One" so "authorized" to carry a gun not been present?
Dickan would have been calling all the shots.
The answer to that?
Shall not be infringed.

Crazy to need a whole book about one state's "gun laws." The law against theft, murder, and rape are very clear. So is the concept of self defense.
Gun Laws: Shall not be infringed.
Short book.
"Without facts, he's pulling that out of hi...thin air."
Please -- from now on, we shall refer to that as his "Chicago bayonet sheath."
Henny, you just made me spit coffee all over my beautiful 27" iMAC.... :-)
The book exist so that you do not become a victim of the system should you ever attempt to defend your own life or the lives of others.
Quoted from the "Understanding Oregon's Gun Laws" website (we have a similar book in Pennsylvania):
"Oregon Gun Laws. A Guide In Plain English."
"Oregon's gun laws are complex and confusing,"
"Do not rely on police or politicians to tell you what the law is. Most have no idea.:
What is the purpose of writing the laws in a complex and convoluted manner? Laws written in such a way that even those empowered with their enforcement dont understand them. Could it be to criminalize the gun owner even when no real crime has been committed? Gun control takes many forms.
Q: Please give some examples of gun laws you consider unconstitutional.
A: All of them.
It's not always the politicians' fault. Here in Arizona you could read the statutes all day and never realize that several years after they were committed to paper, some JUDGE ruled that "visible" meant something you'd never dream that it meant, and "holster" excluded a lot of things that have been "holsters" for over a century -- and you could find yourself under arrest for doing something that the plain language of the statute (as far as anyone would think) explicitly authorized you to do!
Because the system the government uses to write and publish law doesn't require that all these after-the-fact amendments be listed in a place you would be likely to find them when researching what is "current" law, people have to write books to put it all together in one place. And it's a good thing they do.
Henny, you should patent that phrase, it's a classic!
