Another reason to hold Holder

In addition to all the other reasons we've talked about this week for opposing confirmation of Eric Holder as attorney general, The Heritage Foundation alerts us to his "Sixth Amendment Problem."

Citing an article by Harvey Silvergate in The National Law Journal, we learn:

...Holder strongly suggested that, when deciding whether to indict a corporation — and indictment can be a death sentence for companies in certain businesses — they consider whether the company has "cooperated" in the investigation. "Cooperation" was partially defined by whether the corporation agreed to waive the legally protected attorney-client and work-product privileges...including corporate counsel's discussions with employees. Another factor, suggested Holder, would be "whether the corporation appears to be protecting its culpable employees and agents" by advancing or paying those individuals' attorney fees. A further sign of possible noncooperation would be whether the corporation kept the employees on the payroll or entered into a joint defense agreement with any of them. Put simply, the Holder Memo suggested that, by facilitating the ability of employees to continue working and to vigorously defend themselves, the company was demonstrating a noncooperative attitude that could get it indicted.

Think about that. Defending yourself through the legal system makes you a special target of the government.

That is flat-out chilling and un-American. Anyone with this mentality presuming to be our nation's top law enforcer is terrifying.

Eric Holder's easy embrace of the tools of the police state morally disqualifies him from our country's top law enforcement position. Regardless of your political persuasion, Republican or Democrat, this should outrage you. Please join me in opposing his confirmation.

Here's how.

Tuccille on Holder

Civil Liberties Examiner J.D. Tuccille wrote an article on Holder back in November that further proves guns are not the only issue where the nominee is troublesome for civil libertarians. J.D. tells me he'll work up another column, and I'll make sure I link to it when it's up.

The Anti-Gun Rights Examiner

No, that's not Jim Stillman's new title.

But go and give "The unchanged principle of gun control" a read.

"Concealed weapons, rapid fire assault weapons and machine guns have as their sole function in the 21st Century to kill people."

Good grief.

"Their sole function"? Then I guess we'd better disarm the police?

Oh, wait, that's right: They're "the only ones"...

Feel free to leave comments. Hopefully they will generate more light than heat.

Guns Magazine's blast from the past

One of the things I really enjoy from Guns Magazine, where my "Rights Watch" columns appear, is that every month they post online the issue of the month from 50 years ago.

I really get a kick going through the pages, reading the articles and letters that reflect a different era, and I especially enjoy the period ads (and prices, although I haven't tried adjusting for inflation).

I think you'll really enjoy it too (unless you're on dial-up, due to file size).

Do we need any other reason to not confirm Holder other than he was second to Reno under Clinton?

If he gets confirmed, we are in a heap o' trouble!
