Safer Streets 2010: Guns on campus and the CPR Corollary.

Guns on campus is in the Newspapers again. One of the arguments against armed students I address here [The New Wild West]. A few answered, including yours truly as the paper was good enough to publish my response.

Part of the editorial said, "Unlike police officers, permit holders are not required to go through weeks and weeks of training to respond to high-intensity situations. If someone pulls a gun in a classroom, would professors have the ability to respond in the best way? Or would professors become automatic targets?"

Think of the medical emergency in comparison to the criminal emergency. The Paramedics undergo training that is eight hours a day, five days a week for months until they get to clinical rotations with doctors, and then after two months of hospital rotation on a general medicine floor, their OB-GYN, some Pyche, Phlebotomy, and a ton of Emergency, two more months of field internship under the supervision of two experienced paramedics.

Excellent post, John. We should also be reminded about how hard the "professionals" fought the concept of "amateur" CPR.

An acquaintance questioned the statistic of law enforcement officers having a 25% hit rate in armed encounters, and CCW holders having a 90%+ hit rate.

I responded that 1) LEO's probably averaged a slightly longer range for engagement, and 2) it's the difference between a "professional" and an "enthusiast". I pointed out in the larger cities, especially, it is practically illegal to hire anyone that knows anything about guns. He was still kind of doubtful, so I asked: "OK, who would you rather have sexual intercourse with - a "professional" or an "enthusiast"?" THEN he got it. 8)

Thirty-five years ago, I was there. The objections to teaching citizens CPR were identical to the objections to conceealed carry. The doctors and attorneys in the audience began with this question, "Why not let the professionals such as yourself handle it?"

It was not a question of letting the professionals handle it: it was a question of excluding anyone else from handling it.

    Then they began to learn.

CPR saves lives. So does concealed carry.

Well said, and that is from a Paramedic that works in the field everyday. Very good post. People understand, that we as medics can only help if we know there is a problem and are within a reasonable distance to arrive and take action. Just like a law enforcement officer,or a SWAT Team, can only take action if they know of a probem and are within a resonable distance to repond in time to take action. Learn CPR now! And learn how to carry and shoot responsibly. Teach your children responsible ownership before they have to go to college. The life you save may be your daughters.

..and by extension, the life of the nation.

Gun control works outside of due process to take down the nation. It is an abuse of due process. Steal self-defense and the rest of the nation is easy prey.
