Wording needed for Constitutional Amendment

Conservatives in Congress are pushing this week for changes in the Fourteenth Amendment, changes which will not automatically give U.S. citizenship to newborns of illegal aliens.

Amending the Constitution of the United States is a huge undertaking, one which shouldn’t be taken lightly. The ramifications of changing it are profound, as can be seen by the mistake this country made when we ratified the Eighteenth Amendment, banning the manufacture and sale of alcohol.

Changing the Constitution is not always terrible, however. State constitutions are changed continuously, and most of the time it is for the betterment of society. And now, the state of Arkansas is in need of another change in its constitution.

Amendment 35 of the Arkansas Constitution gave the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission broad powers over the public lands in Arkansas. The Commission has abused this power (as all government bodies do when given too much power), banning means of self-defense in a wide area of this state.

The Constitution of Arkansas should be amended to take the power of firearm legislation from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. This, however, may cause unintended problems. An amendment can be simply worded to ban the AGFC from making any regulations pertaining to the carry, possession or transportation of firearms, but the AGFC still requires the ability to specify what calibers are allowed when hunting different species of animals.

The firearms rights group Arkansas Carry is attempting to draft a constitutional amendment to remove the power of firearms law making from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and would like input from the public. Arkansas Carry does not want to obstruct the Commission’s ability to regulate hunting or impede the AGFC’s ability to stop poaching, but a Constitutional amendment is definitely needed to allow the people of Arkansas to have the right to self-defense while using public lands.

All suggestions for the wording of this amendment should be sent to info@ArkansasCarry.com.
