Psychological denial about gun issues

It seems that in many people, a lifetime of bombardment by anti-gun messages and sentiment leads to a sort of suspension of reality when considering gun issues. The indoctrination into the gun control agenda requires a leap of faith and a refusal to consider the issue in any depth beyond parroting back emotion based arguments.

An article in a student-run blog I read this morning clearly demonstrates the level of psychological denial required to accept those arguments at face value.

This article raved about another student article being given a new "award" from the Austin Chronicle for "Best Way to Keep Guns Off Campus." Both the "award winning article" and the blog report pushed for the opposition of legislation that would allow concealed handgun license holders the right to keep their defensive firearms with them while on campus. The argument is that allowing potential victims who have jumped through the hoops to obtain such a license would lead to violence and the only solution is to keep a total gun ban in place.

Of course, this completely ignores the fact that all of these high-profile school shooting occur in schools while already have a total ban. Those bans aren't working, but we're supposed to just blindly continue on and hope that "next time" the ban will prevent a mass shooting.

Yesterday, I was in Columbus scouting locations for the Second Amendment March and drove down a street near Ohio State University on my way to have lunch. At one point, I passed a sign that said "drug-free, weapons-free zone."

Really? Do they honestly believe that putting up such a sign will keep a drug dealer, armed robber, serial rapist, etc. out of the area? It didn't even keep me from driving through with my gun and I obey the laws! They might as well have put up a sign that says "crime free zone."

It's no different than businesses that post a "no guns allowed" sign and expect their business to be safer when the reality is that they just advertised to any potential robber that all employees and customers have been disarmed and it is safe to rob the place.

Both sides of the gun debate have an agenda to push. But it seems that only one side consistently and doggedly relies upon denial to accomplish their goals.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different outcome. Sounds like the anti-gun people to me.

No it isn't. Why do people always say that?

I took one of my liberal friends to the range with me one day. We spent the day shooting my AR15s and my AK-47 and a few other guns. We had a great time. When we got back I started the discussion about "assault weapons" and how anti-gun groups want to ban them. He said that he was all for such a ban and no one needs to have fully automatic rifles. After a moment with my mouth wide open I informed him that the guns we were shooting were the guns they wanted to ban. He didn't know. He just believed what he had been hearing in the news and reading in the paper.

Truth is, most people don't know the full story. They don't get all the facts before making a decision. They believe the emotional arguments that they hear time and again and are totally misinformed on the subject.

Get all the facts people (even the ones that you don't want to hear). Get informed and then decide which side of the fence you want to stand on. You might be surprised.

I can't even find the words to try and explain what I am thinking. Guns are the ultimate freedom. That freedom is what made this country great. That freedom is why every other country hates us yet at the same time wants to live here. Guns are literally woven in to the fabric of this country. Anti gun people really have no clue what they ask or want. They can not see beyond themselves. Those are the people that scare me. I can deal with the guy that wants to steal my car but the one's that want to take my freedom are the worst.

200 years of history have proven that guns do not make America safer, yet the gun lovers insist on repearing the same mistake over and over, expecting a different outcome. That is the definition of insanity.

Alex, Alex, Alex, where do you get these stupid ideas? Proven what? I'd suggest that history has proven that a free populace unable or unwilling to protect itself from the human predators in its midst - criminal, political and otherwise - doesn't remain free very long. If you are content to trust your and your family's safety to the good will of your friendly local police chief, be my guest. Thank you for your Big Brother-like concern, but I choose to be able to protect myself.

May I add a word distinction and comments for perusal here?
'Reality' might be most closely associated with perception.
The word actuality representing what actually has occurred, is occurring or may be caused to occur, independent of perception.
Denial would then be denial of actuality.
Having said that, my opinion is such that in actuality, through both covert and overt methods--
our beloved Constitutional Republic has been sucked dry by the moneylenders and bankrupted through immorality and fiscal irresponsibility on the part of those in the Federal gov't.
The federally manipulated public skrool system is overrun with progressive secularist liberals actively engaged in indoctrinating our youth from preK - 12, and the Socialists, Statists, Marxists and Communists in so-called institutes of higher learning ( those who aren't yet in gov't ) complete the institutionalization process necessary for assimilating the brainwashed into the new-age collective.
    IMHO.

    My 1/2cents worth.

First questions come to mind here is when and where did legislators get the people's consent to violate their constitutional rights and deny not only of-age adults but those already permitted by the State to carry concealed their right to carry on a college campus?

Sure hope this faculty does a better job than admin at VT dealing with a student on a green card that other students feared, teachers complained about and law-enforcement knew he was mentally unstable.

Read somewhere that one actual event outweighs a thousand hypothetical theories.
Laws of physics always win out over perception, denial, wishful thinking and laws of man.
That being the case, an intelligent person would carry despite disarmament rules.
Isn’t that the point of concealed carry anyway?

Truth be known, politicians, political correctness, denial and compliance with laws and rules were factors that directly contributed to the casualty rate of the defenseless students at VT.

Actually, Daniel, I'd love to see a sign that says "Crime Free Zone." I wouldn't have to worry about what people think about carrying firearms there, because obviously there would be plenty. And that might really give the dirtbags pause to think. LOL!

Daniel, you have hit on something. You observe that the liberal gun banners clearly fall into "a sort of suspension of reality when considering gun issues"! --- A SUSPENSION OF REALITY !! --- Check out your (our) nemisis the mindless backwardsland line dropper Alex, and your liberal examiner.com writers, Clifford Bryan, Jack Dunning, Jay Riestenberg, John Presta, and others, ALL OF WHOM LIVE TERMINALLY IN A KIND OF LA LA LAND where statistics, facts, history, love of freedom and the Constitution have absolutely NO BEARING on their thinking processes or lack thereof. Incredibly, they all seem motivated by a sort of mind blinding HATRED for all of the aforementioned things! I can understand bias. We all are biased in some way. I can understand stupidity. We all have that, too, to some degree or another. But the depth of the vacuum in these people's heads and hearts is beyond my comprehension. Maybe you can explore this further in the future.
