Several clubs and organizations around the state will be holding informational meetings concerning GOAL’s reform bill H.2259 “An Act Relative to Civil Rights and Public Safety”. These presentations include a concise history of where the state went wrong and where we need to go to fix over three decades of failure.
The citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and to a greater extent the United States, are too focused on the object, the “gun”, rather than the root cause; the “criminal human element.”
Whenever there is a crime of violence where a firearm has been used, there is a gnashing of teeth by the mainstream media behaving like Pravda, politicians violating their oath of office, and anti-civil rights groups like the Brady Campaign always asking for more of your hard earned tax dollars. The higher the death toll, the louder the battle cry for more money and more “object control”.
These misled reactions are a symptom of the immaturity of those who cry out to the public for support. Support, they hope, to ban an “object” and unconstitutionally strip us of our God given rights of self protection.
Refocusing our laws to properly address the “human criminal element” is a crucial emphasis of MassGunLawReform as detailed in H.2259. This reform package is designed to separate lawful possession laws and criminal enforcement laws. Thus we can protect the freedoms of the law-abiding citizens while taking the appropriate measures to severely punish the human criminal offenders.
While I think we can all agree that criminals should not have legal access to firearms, I disagree that we should be doing that through more restrictive gun laws like “One Gun a Month”.
The correct method to protect society from convicted criminals is to limit those criminal's access to freedom. The question is, can society overcome what has become its coddling nature and regain its maturity toward criminals or will it continue to resist the necessary reforms that will resolve the vast majority of our issues? Until society is mature enough to deal with the “human criminal element”, this state will continue to spiral down the path it is currently on.
For certain this reform package represents a cultural change. Massachusetts society has gotten away from punishing the criminal and has traditionally tried to find fault in an “object”. This method is culturally entrenched as our society finds it difficult to subject people to just punishment for their actions, yet strangely they want to punish the law-abiding before committing any crime at all.
I am pleased to say that where ever GOAL has been able to make their full presentation on these important cultural changes, it has been well received. I find this encouraging.
The answer is not more “Gun Control” laws, it’s Better Laws!

Well said.

In my area the Police are totally frustrated with arresting those committing serious crimes, only for the criminal to be released - sometimes before a complete police report is filled out. Within the city limits there are ~1,500 criminals (not in jail) who have been arrested 100 times or more; and ~50,000 who have been arrested six (6) times or more.
.
The penalty for a getting arrested, and convicted, for burglary is six (6) months probation with deferment. If, not arrested again within the probationary period, deferment allows the crime to be expunged from the criminals record. If the criminal is arrested, and convicted, within the probationary period, the penalty is twelve (12) months probation without deferment STILL NO JAIL TIME! It is not until arrested, and convicted, for a third offense is jail time applied to the crime of burglary; and several times more if the criminal manages to not get arrested during the deferment period. ITS INSANE !!
.
PUNISH CRIMINALS, not those seeking to survive against those who have been arrested time, and time again, by the porous justice system; seeking to survive by using our inalienable rights endowed by our creator and protected by the 2nd Amendment, as law-abiding citizens.
