U.S. Concealed Carry Association has supporters, detractors

Some readers left good comments about the first article on the U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), which you can read in the original article. Some are worth responding to. Feedback is running about 50% in favor of USCCA. Tim Schmidt of USCCA also answered questions, which are printed verbatim below.

Correction - Buckeye Firearms Association is not NRA's chartered state association. That would be our good friends at the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association.

1 Cor. 12:12-31 comes to mind as I read your two articles:

"The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body..."

So it is in the pro-gun community.

To answer Howard's question, "...how can it help you “be more effective as a concealed carry licensee?” - by providing information you don't get through typical firearms training.

The physical skills are simple - not easy, and require practice, but are basic, boiling down to grip, sight alignment, and trigger control - and taught by many schools. The mental is far more complex, and few firearms instructors are qualified or interested in teaching them. USCCA provides a valuable resource of collected information, access to a community of widely varied experience (active and past law enforcement, military, advanced training instructors, people who have been forced to defend themselves or others, etc.), most of whom are willing to share both their experience and expertise.

As noted, not everyone values these benefits equally.

This guy is nothing more than a marketer who stumbled onto an untapped niche to make his fortune. Read and listen to this interview and you'll understand that his passion is marketing websites, not the 2nd Amendment. www.tinyurl.com/mkoq59

The magazine is the United States CCA. It is national in scope. It's 'collected' information is extremely good and does range from the tool and its parts to excellent information and experts on the 2nd Amendment. The hard copy magazine is an excellent product. The members forum is great! USCC never set out to replace physical training. Yikes! If you are a racquetball player and you read books on technique (swing, serve, return, footwork, etc.) you are not replacing training and practice with what you are reading. Where did that idea re: USCCA ever come from? Yes, I get a little irritated with the 'marketing' stuff....but I would rather put up with a little irritation while being grateful to know an entrepreneur and free market citizen living the American dream!! What is going on here? Do you think he should run his business the way YOU want him too? Don't like where he sent his money? So now do you want to Obamanize him and 'redistribute' his money for him? Hmmmmm?

Very nice, Chad D. Baus. Thank you for your answer. It calmed me.

Lee: Nice try sidetracking with the Obama red herring.
So now you want to Obamanize me and tell me what to write about and how to pump your favorites? You want to “redistribute” my writing output?

Chad Baus and I did worked together discrediting the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence before the legislature. For all he’s done for Ohio, Chad deserves the kind of money Tim earns with USCCA.

Not all “free market citizens” are equal in their own eyes. Some like to “redistribute” your hard-earned income and use a ton of fancy marketing (paid by you as part of their cost) to convince you the pig you bought is a gazelle. All this runaround, on top of Schmidt’s missing support of gun rights in his own state, along with the 50% negative feedback on USCCA, only confirm that there’s something worth discussing.

The more y’all scream, the more suspicious it looks. I’ve seen nothing to indicate I should change my conclusion, but I’m starting to wonder if maybe I was too fair.

I make an assumption here that most posters are not only gun rights supporters but they support all rights. Tim has the right to run his business as he sees fit and nothing in Howard's articles have tried to change that. Lee says he "gets a little irritated with the 'marketing' stuff." He has made a determination that the good outweighs his irritation. For me, the proprietor of a business should respond to his customers in a timely fashion. The customer gets to decide what a timely fashion is. The proprietor should do their best not to irritate the customer. If a proprietor does either of these poorly, he will go out of business. In an online business, there are many more people that you can irritate or ignore before you fail. The same goes for large corporations. Proprietors of these types of business know that and so they seem to run their business with profit being more important than customer service. Profit is important but it takes customers to make profit.

We are losing America to an apathetic populace that is okay with mediocrity. We are just fine with voting for the lesser of two evils instead of voting for the best candidate. Many complain of high CEO pay and bonuses but they are not will to become share holders and change the status quo. Many complain about Wal-Mart but they have allowed Wal-Marts lobbyists to get legislation passed that makes it virtually impossible for competition to exist. The major oil companies have done the same thing while we complain but do nothing.

theaton: No problem. I agree with you on how we are sliding into Idiocracy. People claim they support capitalism, but their behavior indicates they easily justify despotism and feudalism when they feel they are "right." Tim has the right to run his business as he likes. People have the right to join. Members have the right to continue or quit. I have the right to report when I find things not all on the level. People can agree, disagree, or not read it. The more they shout me down, the more evidence I'm onto something.

I belonged to USCCA for two years but I tired of Tim's incessant haranguing me to buy his wares so I dropped them.

    Howard,
Good articles on USCCA. Some of the threads on the USCCA member forums are making some of the same observations you have made (e.g. regarding email marketing) but your investigative journalism (re. WI activism toward concealed carry) was enlightening.

I've been a member for almost a year and have enjoyed the magazine as well as the camaraderie found in the member forums. I believe my membership is quite valuable as I have downloaded all of the past magazine issues in the USCCA archive. Essentially I have gotten 6 years of magazines for only one year of membership. I must also say that Tim has been very fair with me when I had a complaint or problem. I don't know if I'm going to be a member 18 months from now but I feel I'm getting my money's worth at this time.

    Keep up the good work,

    HP

I make no bones about it... I'm a satisfied member of USCCA. Been a member for about 5 years and in my nearly 80 years have never had a magazine that I habitually read cover to cover - every issue. The series this past year on legal self defense issues was excellent. The frequent articles on shooting drills have been good. The "free" access to all past copies and member discussions is good when I wish get info on products or the experience of others on gear or weapons. Did a download from USCCA on improving my accuracy just before I went for my Texas CHL [CCW]and reduced my shot group by 30%. Had one of the highest scores in the class. I do not have the money for a great deal of range time or expensive gun classes. The articles in Tim's magazine help to develop the thinking for possible life and death situations and the "do & don'ts."
As Tim says, if you are not happy, you get your money back - that's fair!

When Tim first started his magazine he came up with the idea or was coached into providing
a bumper sticker and a embroidered patch to sell with his magazine.
I asked him what is your association about? He just laughed and pointed to his bumper sticker.
Can't anyone see that this is all he is about. He just wants to sell memberships and give
people the dream of belonging to a cause to make him money. Trust me Tim is estatic that
anybody bought into his (association). It is time to tune him out.
