Guns, women, and the Brady Campaign
The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence believes that keeping firearms in the home is dangerous for women. But recent research indicates that their conclusion has little factual support.
On a page entitled “Facts, Studies and Reports,” the Brady website references a 1997 study originally published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. This study surveyed just three counties across the country, which the authors called an “analysis of a large population.” The authors’ conclusion: “keeping a gun in the home is associated with increased risk of both suicide and homicide for women.”

Quick! somebody buy Sarah Brady a gun.
Let her add data points to her side of the argument.
Does ANYONE believe what these people say anymore?
I put them on the 'you gotta be kidding' list.
Why these people refuse to accept the fact that gun control is indeed the sole cause of violent crime in the US? Remember the the Brady Camapign is nothing but an excuse to cover up the fact that the secret service was incompetent when protecting President Reagan from a illusioned loony.
No Jay, gun control is not the sole cause of violent crime in this country. There are many causes, but most can be traced to the actions of evil people. Gun control is the reason those evil people feel relatively safe in practicing violent crime, and the reason so many innocents are harmed without viable recourse to avoid it, but it doesn't make someone a violent criminal, it just supplies violent criminals with helpless victims.
It should be noted that according to the US Bureau of Justice Statistics 2006 National Criminal Victimization Survey 4,193 females defending themselves with a weapon (gun or otherwise) against rape/sexual assault while in 30,053 rape/sexual
assault incidents the attacker used a gun.
Seems pretty clear who's using guns, the attackers of women.
Also your mock indignation at the sample size used in Archive of Internal Medicine article shows you should drop statistical commentary from your repertoire, you're clearly out of your depth on that one. The US Bureau of Labor Stats uses a sample of 60,000 households to help generate unemployment data for a working population of around 155 million. I suppose you are virulently critical of them as well?
So... You're trying to say women shouldn't be armed, to keep the rapists safe?
Pottie: The point is that comparing the Kellermann paper to the entire US population shows sampling error. In this case, the entire population study shows that Kellermann is once again wrong. He is an expert at picking sub-populations that "prove" his desired point; his bias makes him a poor researcher. But don't take my word for it. Read what the National Academy of Science wrote about his conclusions being "of little relevance." Kind of like your comments here, which are the result of you not reading the article very closely.

I believe: "Don't beat your wife, and she won't kill you or herself."
Unfortunately there remains a big divide between men and women who carry. Texas is one of the few states with statistical data on the applicant's gender, and there's better than a four to one ratio of men to women applicants. I suspect similar stats obtain in the other RTC states.
