Anti-gun arguments focus on the suicides that occur every year caused by guns and those suicides are the direct fault of the gun and so if the guns went away then the suicide rate would fall dramatically and there would be no more gun suicides.
All the above arguments are invalid. Anti-gun people are delusional. If all guns were instantly gone, innocents would still be hurt and/or killed by autos, bats, bicycles, boats, chemicals, dark, drugs, glass, heights, knives, motorcycles, swords, tools, poisons, and yes, even water.
Accidents, criminal activity and suicides are the reasons gun activists want to ban guns.
Before there were any guns on earth, there were accidents crimes and suicides. Historical accounts abound. The Torah, Bible, Koran and Talmud recount such, as do myriads of other ancient documents.
The anti-guns argument degrades to become only guesses about what the results would be if all handguns disappeared.
Guns are not going to go away. Give it up.

Japan has one of the highest suicide rates of any developed country, yet legal private ownership of firearms is virtually nonexistant. They jump in front of trains, off of tall buildings and yes, disembowel themselves with edged weapons. But you will never hear the statistical cherry pickers at the Brady Bunch mention Japanese suicides. As mark Twain said: "Figures never lie, but liars do figure."

    Howard,

This is the first of your articles that I have read, but I will be returning to read more. I firmly believe that if more people understood some basics principles of statistics, they wouldn't be misguided by the gun-suicide claims.

Suicide is a genuine problem. Addressing the weapon of choice is not the way to reduce suicide rates, though. We need to consider the reasons people are driven to end their lives. We need to have conversations about stress, anxiety, depression, etc.

    Just my two cents,

"Countries with moderate firearms ownership levels have the lowest suicide rates."

Because of this, I'm willing to do my part. I will accept ownership of any firearms from any gun owner anywhere in order to bring the average U.S. firearms ownership level down to moderate.

    DDS: U R 100% CORRECT!! But here's the argument I keep hearing...

"...anyone knows that 'Guns r too convenient as a suicide tool. Take them away & suicide becomes harder. Maybe- just maybe- that might prevent a suicide? Duhh.' "

    Here's what I throw back re:JAPAN:

When they take subways & TALL buildings away! cause they're JUST as "convenient"!
    ==========

UPDATED FACT: JAPAN's Suicide rate has reached epidemic proportions!!! CURRENT STATS show 50-60K/yr throwing themselves off High Rises!!! ...and ON THE RISE! JAPAN's Gov't doesnt know what to do about it! Ask a Brady worker what JAPAN should DO about it?

FACT: JAPAN changed all Traffic/subway lights lights to BLUE (from RED) because research showed it to "calm" a man where RED agitated! YES, its true. U now stop at a BLUE light, not a RED. 1 effort to curb suicide...

** DONT BELEIVE A WORD THE BRADY BUNCH HAS TO SAY. THEY'RE SO FULL OF %@#$* DONT EVEN DESERVE UR TIME!!

PS: Just came back from living in J

Of the Suicides by gun, "What percentage are Brady Campaign Volunteers?". Oh well, if the Brady Campaign suffers their volunteers committing suicide, STUFF HAPPENS.

outspoken2, the Brady Campaign staffers have a 100% rate of suicide of the intellect.

In the 1990s Canada changed their laws to penalize parents whose children used firearms as a tool for suicide. The successful suicide rate did not change. Just the means. The research on this is pretty clear cut. Firearm availability has no effect on the rate/count of successful suicides, just the proportion committed by firearm. You should be able to find a section on this in one of Kleck's books.

Ludwig: It was Kleck's paper "Measures of Gun Ownership Levels for Macro-Level Crime and Violence Research." He found that the percent of suicides committed with guns was an indicator of gun ownership levels (correlation). BUT that doesn't make gun ownership an indicator of overall suicide rates. Just the proportion, as you note.

Most of my friends own greater than 25 firearms per capita in our own "firearms enthusiast" demographic. Over the years, one of my peers has died from a car accident, a number form disease and old age. None from suicide. Many of them own more then 100 firearms in their collections and carry guns every day. If I were to extrapolate from MY empirical evidence, it would seem that the more guns you own, the less likely you are to commit suicide with a gun.

Only person I knew that committed suicide with a gun was a Bay Area Computer Programmer that bought the gun with the express purpose to suicide with it. If he'd owned a lot of guns most of his life, maybe he wouldn't have shot himself...

People who want to ban all firearms ask for automatic rule,by the young, the strong, and the many. No thank you, you anti-gun morons. Your logic is like blaming supermarkets for fat people.
