Such a terrible tragedy. Perhaps this woman professor was on an antidepressant.
The Physicians Desk Reference states that SSRI antidepressants and all antidepressants can cause mania, psychosis, abnormal thinking, paranoia, hostility, etc. These side effects can also appear during withdrawal. Also, these adverse reactions are not listed as Rare but are listed as either Frequent or Infrequent.
Go to www.SSRIstories.com where there are over 3,600 cases, with the full media article available, involving bizarre murders, suicides, school shootings/incidents [53 of these] and murder-suicides - all of which involve SSRI antidepressants like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, etc, . The media article usually tells which SSRI antidepressant the perpetrator was taking or had been using.
How about if no one could get a gun? How many such cases occur in Europe or in Japan, where the availability of weapons is much more limited?

Exactly how do you popose to turn the USA, with something like 120 million long arms and 80 million handguns in the posession of 100 million Americans, where posession of same is a right protected by the Constitution, into a huge "gun free zone" like Japan? Do you really think it would be as simple as passing a law and having everyone line up to turn in their guns?
There were reports that that very problem was studied during the Clinton years. Supposedly they decided we don't have enough cops to conduct house to house searches and confiscation. Very likely the military would not participate because of "Posse Comitatus" restrictions and refusals to obey illegal orders. That left them with the idea of having UN Peacekeapers brought in. At that point the whole idea was dropped as unworkable. So, your plan would be....?
Joe: Fair question. Look up these articles:

These are just two examples, but the fact is that gun availability has no relationship to suicide or violent crime.
Joe, are you aware that the Britain is now the most violent first world nation on Earth? Uh huh, years after they completely banned firearms they are now the most violent of all western societies. Don't take my word for it. Check with the EU and UN, they did the studies that say so. Then google "genocide" and see how many people have been murdered by their own governments after first being disarmed. Then get drunk. You will have earned a good drunk after discovering how wrong you have been.
The good news? You don't have to continue being wrong.
Gun Free Zones = Mass murder assured killing zone. Just dial 911 and die.

If American's could have carry concealed weapons on to planes legally, the 911 attack would have failed and the twin towers would still be standing! Think about that!
Duh, I would have thought by now it'd be obvious to everyone that going to a college campus without a gun is irrational behavior. This is why we have the right to carry guns and other forms of personal protection guaranteed in the federal constitution.

But, you are right, if nobody had guns, there would be no shootings; however, reality is that removing all the guns from all the people is unrealistic. Besides, we would find other ways to kill each other in mass, such as bombs and homemade guns.
Still not convinced the U of A is a gun free zone.
It may or may not be, but the language is worded such that it may in fact be legal for students and staff to carry with a valid Alabama license to carry.
