Gun control and the Republican party (Part 2)
In recent times, gun owners and the Republican party (GOP) have had a mutually beneficial relationship. By the same token, when the GOP is out of power in Washington, gun owners suffer. But what if the Democrat party was rehabilitated? While this would benefit self-defense supporters, it would devastate the GOP.

For years America's gun owners have been to the GOP as African-Americans have been to the Democrats. We are allowed to donate, campaign and sit under the "big tent". But we have had to sit in the back rows, stay quiet, and never ever ask for anything in return. Obama's campaign and election may have substantially altered the Aftican-America's relationship with the Democrats. Time will tell.
Sen. Schumer was instrumental in winning the Democrats control of both houses of congress by active
Great post. By the way, it is the Democratic Party. Calling it the "Democrat Party" let's the author's bias shine through.
I am a Dem and was prepared for some eye rolling reading your post. To the contrary, I found your analysis spot on. I am liberal, live in a major metropolitan city, and pro-2A,---as are the guys I shoot with. I do think that the rank and file, and newer Dems are slowly "getting it," (I'll even put Obama in this catagory). The problem is the "old school" leadership who have invested so much in this issue that they just can't bring themselves to admit that they are on the wrong side of the trend.
Gun control is a fundamental part of socialism and the leftists in the Democrat party can no more abjure gun control than they can stop their attempts to stop free speech and free practice of religion.
To do so would be to disown 50 years of progressivism.
Good luck with that.
It would certainly be wise for more democrats to support second amendment rights, but it doesnt take a weatherman to see which way the wind is blowing.
Oy dios mio. Folks are really up in arms over use of the term Democrat Party versus Democratic Party?
Demguy: Thank you for reading it through. Let's not forget the money that put them in office in the first place. I write about that in other articles. BUT Mikee! Socialism is just as prevalent in the GOP now. It just depends who's pushing what agenda that justifies more government, and payback to campaign contributors.
Seven of the nine justices presently on SCOTUS were nominated by Republican presidents. Let's not pull punches, Mr. Nemerov, Campaign Finance Reform directly violates the 1st Amendment's provision: "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech...". And finally, when in power the Repubs have used us to get elected and then capitulated with the Dems to negate the Bill of Rights when in office. Screw 'em! "A pox on both their houses."
Lee: In part 1, I noted that the GOP grew the government, contrary to professed values. In this part, I called McCain unelectable, and noted how the McCain-Feingold law restricts First Amendment rights. Pulled punches?
I believe in the 2nd Amendment and also the remainder of the Constitution, which is why I don't waste my votes on Republicans or Democrats. The Libertarian Party walks the walk regarding each individual's right to self-defense and all freedoms.
I wonder if the Democrats are caving for now on the gun rights issue so they can consolidate their hold on office, then revisit the issue in the not too distant future using some backdoor or Trojan Horse?
I think we need to look at the BIG picture here. It is not about the Democrats or Republicans. In my opinion, it is about the money holders. The ones that pay for our elections to go as they want it to. It is of my opinion that they are indeed buying our elected representatives. Not only that, but they are controlling our elected officials through fear. What is your opinion on this?
