Does civilian gun ownership cause bloodshed?

("Joe" - One of history's most successful gun control proponents, who led tens of millions of his people to a new life of peace and prosperity. Photo courtesy of Wikipedia.)

In the last article, reader “Alex” commented:
“Obviously it is time to repeal the second amendment because of all the bloodshed it has caused.”

Who can forget Switzerland? They are intensely armed and have stayed democratic and at peace during two world wars.

Right you are, Howard! Most free peoples have yet to comprehend that allthe 'civil wars' in other nations are actually murders AFTER the populace was disarmed.

Then the real killing started. Mass executions of enemies of the state. No due process, no rights, no ability to resist.

AFTER they were disarmed by governments...

Would Alex call for the re enactment of the Prohibition Amendment in light of all the "bloodshed" that alcohol has caused. Obviously, Alex thinks that laws written on paper determine human conduct, not to mention the notion that guns leap off of tables and fire themselves

  • What is a 'Right'? 2 years ago
    Report Abuse

In context, a ‘Right’ may be most simply defined as---the status of an individual without regard to the presence of any other person or persons.
As expressed in the American Declaration of Independence ‘that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights…’ identifies the considered source and origin of the individual’s status implied by the word ‘Rights’, but naturally presupposes the presence of another person or person who could affect this otherwise unalienable status.
Borrowing here and probably paraphrasing…a question has been provided for the purpose of assisting those in search of a context for apprehending the implications of the word ‘Rights’ in its purest sense as…
“If you were the only person in existence on the entirety of the planet, what ‘Rights’ would you have?”

This 'Right' as applicable to 'Arms' (in present day terms most applicable to hand-held 'firearms')

“If you invented a firearm would you have the ‘Right’ to keep and bear it?”

Howard - Yes, also thanks for a great article. I hope Alex and those like him will read it and wake up. I'm aways saddened by those with strong opinions based on ignorance.

The noted science fiction author L Neil Smith wrote an article called "Murder by Gun Control" many years ago, where he argued that we're far past the point where any rational human being can honestly believe the lies told by the citizen disarmnament conspiracy. Let me see.. yeah, here it is

Well worth a read. JPFO has also done a lot of great work on this topic. "Gun Control, Gateway To Tyranny" is worth a read. I don't think they sell "Lethal Laws" any more.

I have to agree with Howard about Professor Rummel's work, he's the real heavy hitter on the subject. The information he has collected is just staggering. I am not even going to try to summarize his conclusions, you wouldn't believe me - you REALLY need to explore his website for yourself.

If the Alex's of the world are so worried about civilian bloodshed, perhaps they should work on outlawing motorvehicles. The human inventions have killed more people and destroyed more property than anything else invented in the last 1000 years (obviously excludingthe mass murders by crazed despotic rulers)

(sigh) Sadly, it's not just the crazy, despotic governments - look up "Operation Keelhaul" sometime. Point taken, though. Firearms deaths are actually FAR down the list of causes of death.

Someone explain to me what happened. Romney was in first place, McCain was dead last and broke. the next morning, McCain wins when Romney steps down. (even though he said the night before he was in all the way). The way I see it, McCain was appointed by Wash.D.C. to oppose Their appointed one knowing (Obama)would be placed in office according to plans.

Most arguements against the 2nd Amendment are really fake. The same arguements can be used againts the other Amendments. How many people have been killed by the newspapers starting wars? We really need only one religion, a state one and women voting, whats that all about? Do we really need a Federal Income Tax? And, my God, why should 18 year old morans vote? (So what if they can serve to protect our rights) And... if we got rid of the speedy trial stuff we could get malafactors off the streets faster. I say open up the box so we can take more freedoms away. "This is the greatest country in the world, help me change it".

Is there any way at all to get this article into lame stream media? Probably that it wouldn't do any good. They would just turn their noses up a it. If I had someone giving me millions of dollars to spew ignorance and arrogance from my mouth I would keep on denying truth and fact..... No, wait, I wouldn't,BECAUSE I HAVE A CONSCIENCE!!

Look out, Howard! It's the dreaded Captain Kidd. I'm warning you ahead of time: talking to this guy is a lot like slugging the tarbaby. You'll get stuck, but you won't be able to teach him anything.

Capt. Kidd: No, people cause genocides. Criminals kill people. Criminals in positions of power kill more people more easily. People in favor of bigger government enable criminals to obtain vast amounts of power, so they may more efficiently kill people. Criminals prefer unarmed victims, because it lowers the 'cost' (risk) of their activities.

People who support civilian disarmanent and bigger government, support this entire process. So we can conclude, in your small way, Captain Kidd causes genocide.

Way to duck the question, Howard! Obviously, you've learned at the knee of Don Kates who used to say the Holocaust was caused by gun control (a view held by many in NRA circles), but was severely rebuked by the ADL and many historians.

Of course, no amount of ducking can erase the example of Saddam's Iraq. For about 4 decades, Saddam had a brutal dictatorship in Iraq and he was responsible for mass murders. Yet, during his regime, you could own virtually any type of firearm--even automatic weapons.

Capt. Kidd: I just gave you an answer you didn't like, so you claim I ducked the question. Great attempt to duck my answer.

As per Don Kates, you know nothing about me, except that I appear to agree with Kates. This makes you a bigot. Bigots take one or two aspects about a person, fill in all the blanks, claim to know everything about that person, and justify hating them.

Thank you for documenting that you are an ignorant, intolerant, angry bigot. Go somewhere else to change the diaper you dirtied, that you now demand others clean.
