Cabela's: No more ammunition for California?
Cabela’s recently circulated a letter stating that if Governor Schwarzenegger doesn’t veto pending legislation in California, Cabela’s will no longer sell ammunition to California customers.
Cabela’s has no retail outlets in California. California Assembly Bill 962, which Schwarzenegger must veto by October 11, states that ammunition can only be sold “in a face-to-face transaction.” Cabella’s has been shipping to California customers via remote transactions (internet, phone, etc.)
A source at Cabela’s declined to say how much ammunition normally ships to California, but said they have “many good customers” there.
The only good news is that this ammunition will be redirected to states which still recognize that the Second Amendment is about functioning firearms: guns with ammunition. So there may be some easing of the persistent shortage elsewhere.
Beginning on February 1, 2011, AB 962 requires retailers to create a registry of handgun ammunition buyers by doing such things as:
· Obtain the buyer’s thumbprint.
· Record the buyer’s driver’s license information.
· Transaction records must be kept by retailer “for a period of not less than five years from the date of the recorded transfer.”
· Records “shall be subject to inspection at any time during normal business hours by any peace officer…”
This bill admits that its purpose is to create new crimes.
The Brady Campaign claims this is bill “seeks to prevent gun violence by reducing the easy access to ammunition by criminals, gang members, the dangerously mentally ill and other persons prohibited form [sic] possessing firearms and ammunition.” As with all gun control, this about being seen to be “doing something about crime.”
This is very curious, because the next article will show that California stands among the few remaining criminal-friendly states by ensuring that decent folk can’t defend themselves.
California’s “assault weapons” law, passed in 1989, resulted in confiscation of heretofore legal guns owned by heretofore law-abiding citizens. So California already has a history of using registration records to unilaterally initiate confiscation. Australia and the United Kingdom used registration records to confiscate firearms, following enactment of their gun bans.
AB 962 won’t stop drug gangs–which have established, successful smuggling conduits into the state–from simply adding ammunition to their shopping lists. The United Kingdom, surrounded by ocean, has seen an increase in “gun crime” since enacting a nearly-total gun ban in 1997. It’s hard to see how California can secure its borders better than the UK.
The NRA Members Councils of California are mounting an effort to repeal AB 962. You can help.

How are they going to battle Terminators in San Fransicko if they can't order any ammo? This is what Arnold wants I bet?
"Cabelas recently circulated a letter stating that if Governor Schwarzenegger doesnt veto pending legislation in California, Cabelas will no longer sell ammunition to California customers."
And that is precisely what the supporters of that bill wanted in the first place. Surely AB962 does not apply to LE agencies, etc. Hopefully, Cabela's decision includes any and all government agencies.
@David. You idiot. That is what the California State Assembly wants. We won't know what the Governor wants until he VETOs AB962 or let's it pass into law.
The demoncraps in california are driving good people away.
I don't see the NSSF talking about an all-out firearms, parts and ammo embargo on California until these fascist laws are repealed. They talk the 2A game, but where the rest of us try to live our politics, they play both sides to their own profit, stoking the RKBA fires on the one hand, but selling all over CA to LE on the other. How long does anyone think these laws would stay on the books if CA LE faced a desert of arms, parts and ammo themselves, like the legislature wants to inflict on the citizens, or is that market just too big for anyone to walk away from it?
The market for LE sales to Ca. may appear too big to vacate, but to not vacate it will spell the death knell of the companies who think they are cutting a fat hog in the hams. A temporary uptick in profits may occur to companies who don't abandon the Ca. LE market, but in the end they will be bankrupted when other states follow suit, expecting the same surrender. The gun and ammo manufacturers cannot survive with just the LE market to sell to. If they are stupid enough to believe they can, they deserve to die economically.
My God, aren't we language sensitive on Examiner?
Another state taken off my lists of places to do business or visit; California, N. Korea, New York, Cuba, Venezuela, ...
Approximately SEVEN BILLION bullets sold in America each YEAR.
If only TEN PERCENT of the bullets were responsible for the death of a person then that would mean that there would be at least SEVEN HUNDRED MILLION dead people happening from guns each year.
Is there? Of course not.
If only ONE PERCENT of the bullets were responsible for the death of a person then that would mean that there would be at least SEVENTY MILLION dead people happening from guns each year.

And if only ONE ONE HUNDETH OF ONE PERCENT of the bullets were responsible for the death of a person then that would mean that there would be at least SEVEN HUNDRED THOUSAND dead people happening from guns each year.
And if only ONE ONE THOUSANDTH OF ONE PERCENT of the bullets were responsible for the death of a person then that would mean that there would be at least SEVENTY THOUSAND dead people happening from guns each year.
And that's STILL far too large of a number - it's more than double the actual number who die from the use of a gun each year.
So some think that because much less than ONE ONE THOUSANDTH OF ONE PERCENT of bullets are used to harm people each year then restrictions are reasonable on the 99.999% that are in very safe hands that harm no one? WHY IS THIS...?
Thank God I live in South Dakota! But then we vote out anti gunners, anti hunters and librial types any way .
I hope Cabela's and other ammo sellers follow Ronnie Barrett's example.
@Carl from Chicago. You're reading that paragraph wrong. It would not be Cabela's decision. If AB962 is signed into law, then all ammo sales in Kalifornia can only occur through face-to-face transactions. Since Cabela's has no retail outlets in the state, they can only sell their products by mail-order, phone-order, or online. That is, other than face-to-face. By law, they would then be prevented from selling ammo in CA. This would be a decision made by the state's political regime, not out of spite by Cabela's management.
I grew up in California, but I will never live there again. It is being run by children.
Too late,I already have over 8,000 rounds...
DFTL,
Do you really think 8,000 rounds is a significant number of rounds? My unit alone uses that many for one qualification table. The government has way more bullets........unfortunatly
Mousey
There are conditions in life that reach a point of no return. In Californis, antigun ferver has reached such a crossroad. The antigun sentiment there is in sinc with so many in the power structure that it is irreversible. California is lost but that loss should be a cautionary tale for the rest of us not to let it happen elsewhere.
Great commentary, y'all. And thanks for visiting!
I lived in California for 18 years. Let's just say it was very educational, and I am grateful to live in Texas now. When one lives without Liberty, it makes one more appreciative of It.
I appreciate the article and highlighting the need to act, but at least please double check and update the facts and be honest. The bill only applies to handgun ammunition, and does not place the same restrictions on rifle or shotgun ammunition. Misleading those that can potentially help us, and they find out the truth, will only hurt our cause.
Jim from SoCal says:
"The bill only applies to handgun ammunition, and does not place the same restrictions on rifle or shotgun ammunition."
Jim, you are obviously ignorant on the topic of firearms. There are plenty of handguns which fire shot shells and calibers which are used in rifles. There are also plenty of rifles which fire rounds that are used in handguns. Since any handgun can be engineered to fire any kind of shell, there is no distinction. This legislation is a Trojan horse which appeals to the clueless, like Jim, who think that waving the magic wand of legislation will somehow reduce criminal activity.
Time to grow up Jim and learn to think.
Trepiodge,
FYI, I have contacted the Governor via voice, email, and fax, and urged him to veto this.
I do realize this is a trojan and am not ignorant to that fact.
You need to quit being a rude jackass and wake up to the fact that your behavior just portrays the whole pro-2A community as a bunch of hicks.
The article should portray the truth, and also highlight what this will eventually lead to. Lies are tactics of the anti-2A'ers, and we should not stoop so low.
Jim: On the face of it, you may be correct. However, look again at Chapter 2.6 of the proposed code changes. "Ammunition" is used for both handgun and rifle applications. A "reasonability" test exists in subparagraph 12316.B. regarding if the ammo is for rifle or pistol, where ammo could be used for either. Considering the CA political/legal system, I'll add "handgun."
It remains true that a Cabela's rep told me that they will stop shipping to CA, period.
And of course, when this law doesn't 'work' they will be back to do the same to rifle ammo. Gun ban pols always have one more piece of 'reasonable' regulation that will help 'stop crime.'
...and still proliferating gang violence goes unchecked because the champagne socialists/Marxists/fascists/elitists/hypocrits think it is their right to circumvent the constitution as they choose...
In Iraq people like these were easily identified as insurgents and terrorists bent on instilling chaos.
One more reason for people like me who never committed a crime and never received a dime in welfare and worked hard all their lives to leave California.
What is California going to do when self-respecting hard-working individuals like me who feed the welfare masses will move to other places.
The only reason I liked living in California was because of its extreme beauty, nice people and so many things to do. But, I am sick of laws meant for Children being shoved down the throats of adults.
I am leaving California in January. It was a difficult decision. I am going to miss my family and friends. I am going to pay my taxes somewhere the Government leaves me alone.
Mitch: We need ex-Californians like you in Texas. Nothing like appreciating Liberty when you have lost it and find it again.
Mitch wrote, "I am leaving California in January. It was a difficult decision. I am going to miss my family and friends. I am going to pay my taxes somewhere the Government leaves me alone."
Mitch, I left California in 2003 when I finally took off the rose colored glasses and realized that I was only being used to subsidize an out of control welfare system that had zero accountability. I refused to allow anymore of my hard earned tax money to be used to subsidize an patently corrupt & illegal welfare system that allows every unqualified person to collect benefits while hard working people are force under the threat of legal action to foot the bill.
I miss California, but quality of life is meaningless without a principled existence. I am in 100% agreement with Cabela's position to cease all sales to California. If only the other suppliers would form a cohesive group and send a loud & clear message to Arnold.
The only real purpose for this type of legislature is to ensure the state's MONOPOLY OF POWER.
He just signed the Bill 962. I guess he learned well from the Uncle Adolf.
Only in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia (PRK) could garbage like this become law! and you all keep voting these idiots back into office! Why????? The sooner the left coast slides off into the ocean the better off we'll all be! BTW that goes for NYC, Chicago, and NJ too! Looks like it's time for all people left in Socialist Amerika (USSA), aka (OBAMANATION)who have any common sence at all to vote with your feet and your tax dollars and get the hell outta those socialist hell holes! Or better yet vote the Demosocialist trators out! God help us all if these liberal/socialist get any more of their agenda thru! 2010 & 2012 can't get here fast enough for me!
What needs to happen is for ALL transactions to cease to California government agencies that use firearms. That means no guns, no bullets, no support for the products they already have, nothing, nada, nichts. The problem is government in california thinks they are safe and can get anything they want. If they want to prevent private citizens from getting guns and ammo, then I think private citizens who make them and sell them should cut off the government agencies in california. That is the only way it will stop them.
Just a sad day. I hope dealers of all firearms related items see this as a moral issue to stop doing business in the state. especially the folks that provide ammunition to "official" agencies. I also hope this will be the final straw for firearms owners to finally leave the state. To Kalifornia gun owners, I'm sorry your leaders have seen this as a proper way to treat their citizens.
i live in downtown long beach, i know right? both walmart and big 5 on long beach boulevard dont sell any firearms or ammo at all. the only store in lb is 15 miles north, turners, which has literally 50 boxes of 50rounds on their shelves, not to mention every firearm is overpriced by at least $100. So what do i do? Drive to the whiter side of town meaning orange county. The further you get from Downtown Anywhere the more guns and ammo available in Cali. Anyways the moral of the story is stock up at gun shows or reload while its out there. Oh yeah i love the ugly face these people at downtown sporting goods stores make when you ask where the godam guns are
Got something to say?
