BP has confirmed that there is an oil leak on the sea floor several miles away from the Deepwater Horizon's damaged blowout preventer. The undisclosed specific location of the sub- sea leak is reported to be billowing oil and deadly methane gas.
While the live BP video feed has been focused on the BOP, some oil industry experts have suggested that the leak being reported today has been played down, despite a report from Florida Senator Bill Nelson last month. (See video below)
The third oil leak, which was admitted to by BP shorty after the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20,1020, may now be emerging from behind what many believe has been an oil spill media blackout.
On May 5, 2010 BP confirmed that one of three initial leaks had been plugged. The second leak is the one millions of people have been watching through the BP live video feed. However, the third leak has been virtually ignored.
In the early stages of the 90 day-old disaster, oil industry expert Matt Simmons told NBC News that a major area of seepage was coming from an area about 7 miles from the well. Simmons called it the “elephant behind the mouse.”
Residents in the Tampa Bay area have been concerned over the lack of available information on the potential risks from the disaster.
Should the sea floor leak announced today be confirmed in same location as the one Simmons and Senator Nelson have reported, then BP and the government have been aware of it all along, further substantiating fears of an oil spill media blackout.

the video of the sea floor oil leak is dated 6-13-2010 a long time "before" the latest cap that was made. This isn't from capping now.

Has the rate of the leak 7 miles away increased since the cap was added? If so, then odds are good they are related. The relief well kill is the best hope for stopping it in that case, assuming this leak is someplace in the original bore. Killing the flow has taken this long with ROVs able to reach the site, how much more difficult is it when it's buried under 13,000 feet of rock?

Matt Simmons, once a respected but now a ridiculed industry "expert", should be ignored. He also called for nuking the well (perhaps the worst recommendation ever made. Just imagine a massively leaking RADIOACTIVE leak). He also proselytized the "Peak Oil" myth to try and gain notariety, but which is now widely discredited. Pay no attention to this snake oil salesman behind the curtain.

It is highly unlikely that the casing, which is now trying to hold back the full pressure of the well, was never designed to take on this type of pressure. [Wells will have a production tubing pipe to handle the well flow and shut-in pressure. The larger diameter casing (which is all that is in the well) usually would have high density fluid between it and the tubing, such that if there was ever a problem, then the well would simply kill itself. But as we know, there is NO high density fluid in the well right now.]
This is why BP was so nervous about ever closing it up completely, because when you do so the pressure would increase from around 5000 psi to 8000 psi. Then, BURST!!!
I would like to know what is going on under the sea floor why is there a bigger leak 7 miles away from where the explosion happened? Dont they take core sampels? There might be alot more going on down there than we know or being told.
The sea floor of the Gulf of Mexico has had oil seeping from cracks all over it for millenia longer than anyone has ever been drilling in it. That's why the petro companies want to drill there in the first place. The naturally occurring oil seeps are dead giveaway clues that oil reservoirs are under the sea bed. The drillers are just now finding out that the subterranean pressures in these deep oil reservoirs are a lot more intense than they ever planned for and they got caught by surprise.
Nuke the well already. You don't need to use a dirty one as some genius on this site already assumed. The Soviets used to do it all the time, Obama should follow suit, he has done everything else Soviet-style since he took office anyway

1. Casings are designed to handle shut-in pressure based on a worst case of a full column of gas. Therefore, the shut in pressure would only be a concern if the casing had been damaged.
2. A leak 7 miles from the wellbore is most likely a natural occurance. It would be nearly impossible to have the oil traverse 7 miles. If the casing had failed there would be numerous leaks near the wellbore not miles away.
Isn't it obvious that there is a lot of oil there? This is a huge oil strike, and the only way to get rid of the spill is to tap it and take the oil away. We lack the technology to do that, so let's get it. Then we can forget about the "End of Oil" that is supposed to be coming. I wouldn't put it past Eco fanatics to cause the explosion in the first place, to stop this new source of energy from being developed. I see a fleet of huge sumersible supertankers in the near future.
It is also sure that if Obama bans deep drilling then China and everyone else will jump in to pick it up. They won't have any spills because they will shoot whoever talks about them.

BP & the Government might be ignoring the other leak because you can find millions of leaks in the ocean floor. That is the nature of the game. There has always been natural leaks of oil & methane in the seafloor - this is one of the reasons a lot of oil companies want to build more rigs out there - they would rather be capturing that oil and gas instead of loosing it to nature.
Methane is not a "deadly" toxic gas. It is the same stuff that is supplied as natural gas for cooking and is effectively non-toxic though flammable.
I think your description of the three original leaks is misleading.
The three original leaks were 1) at the riser kink above the BOP, 2) at the end of the riser, and 3) at the end of the drill pipe, just beyond leak #2. As soon as the riser was cut off and the first cap installed, the leak was consolidated above the BOP, and no oil could flow to leaks #2 and 3.
And as for Matt Simmons, his claims have been debunked time and time again on TheOilDrum. It's important to keep in mind that Simmons has an 8000 share short position against BP stock. It's in his financial best interest to do anything he can to drive down the price.
