As of now, the forecasts as to where the oil will wash up next have been exceptionally good for the Fort Myers area. So far, none of the models seen on TV, print, or online have suggested that the oil sheen or tar balls will wash up onto the beaches of Southwest Florida.
Earlier reports suggest that the Florida keys will be the next area for the oil to touchdown but this does not affirm that the surrounding areas will not have long-term damage as a result of the widespread catastrophe.
Fort Myers beaches remain to be clean and free of oil as locals and tourists report that they have not seen any noticeable damage.

U.S Senator Bill Nelson announces a bill to require the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) to compose a long-term strategy for monitoring the pollution from the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster.
This would necessitate a strategy by the NOAA within 45 days and would require that the project be active within a year.
"I have been shocked that NOAA has not had a plan on the shelf that they could pull off," said Nelson, D-Florida.
With hopes that the filing of such a bill would trigger a response from the NOAA, he anticipated that the bill would not have to be assumed.

The monies used to enact such a bill would come from the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund that was made possible by British Petroleum (BP).
Nelson announcement was made while teamed with two Florida Gulf Coast University marine scientists, who embraced Nelson's proposal for the bill.
"There's less known about the deep ocean than we know about the moon," FGCU professor Mike Parsons said.
