Grey's Anatomy begins production on season six next week, and the word on the street is that casting directors are looking for an actor in his 60s to play a Catholic priest in the season premiere. This news immediately lifted the hopes of the countless fans hoping Meredith and Derek might finally get McMarried after all, but EW.com's Michael Ausiello was quick to dash those hopes. In response to a reader who asked if the priest was going to be on hand for a wedding, Ausiello wrote "Yes, there will be a priest, but no, he won't be marrying anyone off. His presence is needed for something far less celebratory. No further explanation should be necessary."
Ausiello's response seems to imply that the show is casting a priest to preside over the funeral of George O'Malley, who was last seen fighting for his life in the season finale, and whose portrayer, T.R. Knight, is leaving the show. But there are a number of other non-celebratory reasons a priest could be paying a visit to Seattle Grace. Here are a few theories:
1. Cancer-stricken Izzie is read her last rites before making a miraculous recovery.
2. As George and Izzie's respective conditions worsen, one of their friends will reveal a hidden faith and seek spiritual guidance. Alex, perhaps?
3. As she prepares to file for divorce, Bailey flashes back to a happier occassion, such as her son's baptism or her own wedding day.
4. Still desperate to get their daughter to reconsider her lesbian relationship with Arizona, Callie's parents send in the family priest to talk to her.
5. The priest is a patient who will conveniently be around to help everyone deal with their grief over George's death.

The priest is obviously for George's funeral, I imagine. Remember that his mom is incredibly Catholic?
