Tuesday character profile: George O'Malley

Name: George O'Malley

Played By: T.R. Knight

Debut Episode: Season One, Episode One "A Hard Day's Night"

Occupation: George was a surgical resident at Seattle Grace up until the end of the season five episode "Here's to Future Days", when he enlisted in the United States Army. However, the day after enlisting, Geroge was gravely injured in a traffic accident. If George survives the accident, he may not recover fully enough to continue his military or surgical careers.

Family: George grew up in a loving family with his parents and two brothers. However, he always felt like the odd man out in his family, since he was more interested in science and medicine than hunting and cars. The O'Malleys grew closer as a family when George's father was diagnosed with cancer and checked into Seattle Grace for aggressive treatments. Unfortunately, George's colleagues were unable to save him.

Romantic History: George's romantic troubles began in season one, when he found out that his secret crush, Meredith Grey, was involved with Derek Shepherd. George was disappointed and attempted to rebound by asking out Nurse Olivia. That relationship came to an end when George contracted syphilis from Olivia, and found out she'd gotten it from his nemesis, Alex Karev.

George got a second shot with Meredith in season two after she broke up with Derek. George finally confessed his love to her, and was rewarded with a kiss. But Meredith was so deeply hurt by Derek that she was unable to move on to another relationship. Their one night stand ended in tears and embarrassment.

George was so distracted the next day at work that he fell down the stairs and broke his arm. The orthopedic surgeon who treated him, Dr. Callie Torres, began a flirtation with him that quickly led to a relationship. But Callie was instantly jealous of George's friendships with his roommates, Meredith and Izzie. Her insecurities caused several speed bumps in their relationship. But Callie stood by George during his father's illness, and the couple grew closer than ever. While on break from the hospital following his father's death, George proposed to Callie, and they immediately eloped to Las Vegas.

George's friends were weary of his rash decision to marry Callie, and they had every right to be. The couple's problems only seemed to worsen once they were married. Callie grew more insecure, and so did George after he learned Callie came from a wealthy family and was secretly paying a fortune for them to live in a fancy hotel suite. After a particularly vicious argument one night, George stormed out and went off to vent to Izzie with a bottle of whiskey in hand. The two friends woke up naked in bed together the next morning, with only fuzzy memories of how they'd ended up in that position. But as their memories of the drunken night became clearer, so did their feelings for each other. After several months of keeping secrets and trying to fix his marriage, George eventually came clean to Callie and left her to pursue a relationship with Izzie.

But after all the build-up, George and Izzie were unable to recreate the chemistry of that one drunken night. They realized they were never meant to be more than friends after all, and George has remained single ever since.

Friendships: Due to his gentle, easy-going personality, George is one character that has been able to form close bonds with many of the other doctors at Seattle Grace. Despite suffering through awkward romantic entanglements with them both, George has remained close friends with his former roommates Meredith, and especially Izzie. He was also close to intern Lexie Grey at one point and briefly shared an apartment with her, but Lexie moved out after developing feelings for George that he didn't notice or return.

Career Milestones: George became infamous on his first day as a surgical intern at Seattle Grace when he nearly killed a patient during his very first surgery. This earned him the nickname "007" (in reference to the James Bond film 'License to Kill'). George took a lot of abuse from fellow interns Alex and Cristina. But it didn't take George long to prove himself as a surgeon. Early in seaon two, George and Alex found themselves stuck in an elevator with a patient during a blackout. Alex choked under the pressure, but George was able to follow instructions from Preston Burke and treat the patient himself, becoming the first intern in their class to "fly solo".

George's career took a minor setback at the end of season three when he failed his intern exam and had to repeat his first year of residency. But after discovering he only failed by one point, George confronted Chief Weber and was allowed to retake the test. George rejoined his friends as residents, and began to discover a gift for trauma surgery, which led him to enlist in the army before his tragic accident in the season five finale.

Memorable Moments:

Season One, Episode One "A Hard Day's Night": George earns the nickname "007" for almost killing a patient during his first surgery.

Season Two, Episode Five "Bring the Pain": George treats a patient entirely by himself in the Seattle Grace elevator during a blackout.

Season Two, Episode Nine "Thanks for the Memories": George has to remove a bullet from his father's rear end after a hunting accident.

Season Three, Episode 15 "Walk on Water": George returns to the hospital and announces that he and Callie have gotten married.

Season Five, Episode 24 "Now or Never": George traces the numbers "007" onto Meredith's hand to let her know he was the mangled patient she'd been trying to save all day.
