The 96th Arizona Town Hall on Economic Development convened on April 25-28th.
The theme of the meeting was “Building Arizona’s Future: Jobs, Innovation and Competitiveness.” A conglomeration of diverse Arizonans met to discuss how to improve economic development in the state. A diverse cross-section of representatives attended the meetings, including ACC Commissioner Paul Newman, retired U of A President Dr. Henry Koffler; Maricopa city manager Kevin Evans, and other public utility leaders.
There were many items on the agenda with regard to the future of the state, including improving preschool through 12th grade; creating a statewide strategic economic development plan; broadening and re-balancing the state’s tax base; improving infrastructure; enhancing the quality of life with more arts, sports and cultural opportunities; management of the state's reputation, creating job training programs, and increasing the availability of capital.
The Town Hall also took action on how to pursue jobs in renewable energy industries.
It was determined that Arizona should pursue international investment capital to fund development activities and that the Arizona Corporation Commission should set renewable energy goals and prices that promote renewable energy production. Arizona will also need to adopt a renewable energy stimulus agenda that creates a road map for developing a vital renewable energy industry.”
The Town Hall will publish its final report and will also tour the state to keep citizens informed about its recommendations and implementation of those goals and ideas.
