As many of you know, I am spending several weeks in New Zealand. In my short time here, I have noticed that this country is both green (as in a verdant landscape) and green in politics and everyday life.
Green cabs are ubiquitous. This cab company offers carbon offsets to compensate for the fuel used in transit by planting trees across the country.
Per their website: Here at Green Cabs we believe it is much better to plant trees to offset the unavoidable emissions we do produce, not just from our vehicles but from our entire operation. We also do this in advance so you can be sure that when you get into one of our Green Cabs the emissions have already been offset.
The caveat, however, is that most people do not take cabs. Even on the windiest and rainiest days it is common to see people walking around town
Even the vineyards are sustainable. We visited several vineyards in the Martinborough valley, like this one:
Green power options are also readily visible. Wellington is replete with wind-generated energy, and windmills dot the landscape.
Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of this integrated everyday green behavior is the signs located near elevators throughout the city which tell visitors that if they're only going up one or two flights, to use the stairs and conserve energy. It is the ordinary and commonplace behavior which facilitate a healthy and eco-conscious population here.
