The 12th annual America Recycles Day (ARD) is coming, November 15th. Will you persuade 5 friends and family members to reduce landfill waste by recycling, and then buy recycled products?
The average American discards nearly 4.5 pounds of garbage daily which goes directly to a landfill. So what can you do? There are 3 parts to the recycling process and the meaning of the chasing arrows in the recycling symbol.
First, don’t send materials or products that can be recycled to the landfill. Gather them for recovery in one of four ways: curbside, drop-off centers, buy-back centers or deposit/refund programs. Facilities exist for sorting items into marketable wares for manufacturing.
Second, manufacturing uses recycled materials as a replacement for virgin raw materials.
For example, give a plastic or glass bottle a second life. It creates a loop that pledges recycling success.
Third, complete the recycling loop; buy products that have recycled content. It makes recycling economically worthwhile.
On Saturday November 7th Edgewater residents had an opportunity to recycle at a local city drop-off center. Jeanette Papp, spokesperson for the Recycling Citizen’s group said, “Any city would be wise and prudent to pay attention to the huge need residents have for recycling.” Papp and her team were present to help residents learn what they can and can not include when they recycle. Papp told people, “Recycling takes education and practice.”
Some of their tips:
Find out what you can or cannot recycle in your community. Lead by example; learn and practice recycling.
Remind elected officials to focus on the environment, support community recycling.
Remind people to recycle batteries, cell phones, electronic waste and hazardous materials.
Tell 5 others to do the same
Make sure recyclables are clean. It makes them easier to process. Plastic bags and wraps are out, they gunk up sorting machines.
