Whether you know it from experience or from looking it up on NRDC's eat local guide, now is a great time for local apples, peaches, pears and more. There's nothing like a fresh-picked-today summer fruit, but running a farmers market isn't always a lucrative business and many small-cooperatively-run markets could really use the grand prize Care2 is offering.

More than 90,000 people have voted in the contest that has a grand prize as well as random weekly prizes and a prize for the biggest recruiter. So far, no DC area markets are among the top vote-getters, but it's not too late for a come-from-behind-victory to earn your favorite market $5000 from Care2.

My favorite is the Occoquan Farmers Market. The town that surrounds it is so quaint and it makes for a fun day. The market itself is great. Everything I need, quick in and out. The vegetables, meat and breads & baked goods make for a great dinner over the weekend. Thanks Occoquan.

my favorite is right in my hometown of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Its a snaller market which makes it easy to get to know all the vendors who get to know your weekly preferences. Homegrown muscians add a distinct local flavor and you can enjoy seeing friends and watching all the children playing hula hoop in the street.
