Fashion week has always celebrated innovation, but a group of NYU's Gallatin students took innovation to the next level by creating a new kind of fashion week- Eco Fashion Week. The week included panelists discussing what it really means to live green and students giving workshops on how to make purses from found fabric. The culminating event of the week was the "Haute Eco-ture" Fashion Show.
Every piece in the show was designed and constructed with 'green' materials. From organic cotton to former curtains and even broken umbrellas recovered from street corners after a storm, the featured designers demonstrated both innovation and environmental consciousness. Dresses, pants, skirts, tops, jackets and jewelry graced the runway demonstrating how we can all "make stuff from stuff we already have."
The show was held in the ground floor of the recently renovated Gallatin building on the corner of Broadway and Washington Place. This building recently received a gold LEED rating, recognizing the the ideological and actual steps the university community is taking to living greener.
Featuring stunning photography by Gallatin student Rebecca Yale, the Eco-ture look book chronicles the designers visions and philosophies. Gallatin alum Kate Goldwater 's recycled fashions featured in the show are available in her East Village store on 7th st between 2nd and 1st Aves. Her store sells vintage pieces, shirts and dresses crafted by Kate herself from recycled clothes, and original painted t shirts by Chris Roma.
