Kentucky Proud: going green by supporting the local economy

With food transportation being among the biggest and fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, many states are finding ways to help this in anyway they can. It is estimated that the average food item in America now travels at least 1,491 miles from farm to plate. Buying local can help curb this stat and to help the local economy. In Kentucky, there is no better way to do that than to support Kentucky Proud.

Buying local helps everyone. It helps the consumer buy fresh produce and more at better prices than grocery stores. The local farmers can sell more of their goods in less time and with less spoilage. All of those locally involved from the farming of the product to your plate benefit from this exchange.

Kentucky Proud products can be found throughout the commonwealth of Kentucky. Look for the Kentucky Proud logo at grocery stores, farmers markets, restaurants and even roadside stands and more. The products can range from produce, specialty foods, beverages, and hand-crafted items. Of course, all of the items have been grown and/or produced in Kentucky.

Retailers, wholesalers and producers must first qualify in order to participate in the Kentucky Proud program. Producers can see their guidelines here. The guidelines for retailer and wholesalers can be seen here.

Support the local economy and buy Kentucky Proud.
