The Hanover Park, Illinois Environmental Committee was presented with the Clean Air Counts (CAC) Silver Level recognition award.

Clean Air Counts is an innovative, voluntary approach to reducing smog-causing emissions in the Chicago Metropolitan region. It works to achieve compliance with the standards of the federal Clean Air Act and to improve air quality in the community.

CAC adopters assess opportunities to reduce emissions and conserve energy in areas related to transportation, energy, operations and maintenance and development. Adopters agree to simple, annual reporting about their efforts so that the campaign can verify members' efforts.

Clean Air Counts is a 6-county regional initiative of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Region V) City of Chicago and the Illinois EPA. It is working toward significant reductions in smog-forming pollutants and energy consumption.

Hanover Park has implemented programs such as household recycling events, energy-efficient lighting installation and Earth Hour participation to make a commitment to undertake voluntary efforts to reduce smog in the Chicago area.

The annual Hanover Park recycling event is scheduled for September 18, 2010, 8 a.m. to noon. It will be held at the Hanover Park Municipal Complex, 2121 W. Lake Street, Hanover Park. They will be accepting things such as bikes, documents to be shredded (3 boxes per vehicle), motor oil, antifreeze, eyeglasses, scrap metal, large batteries, household batteries, cell phones, inkjet cartridges, CFL bulbs, clothing, fire extinguishers, household electronics (like computers, monitors, TVs stereos, microwaves, cameras, and VCRs) See www.hpil.org for a complete list.
