Thursday night, EM & Co.on West 3rd Street in Los Angeles along with Chic Little Devil Style House hosted a packed eco-fashion event. As I slowed to ask someone on the street where to park, a well dressed man informed us that he was the valet for the fashion show. We could go right in and enjoy the show. I already love sustainable fashion but this was like icing on the cake. Parking in Los Angeles is a challenge so this show of sensitivity made me look forward even more to the show . The show featured clothing and accessories made from recycled materials aptly called RE-FASHION: RUNWAY. The mens' and womens' clothing, jewelry, shoes and headpieces were created by L.A.'s most eco-cool fashion designers. Designers showing included Linda Loudermilk showing men's & women's clothing, Deborah Lindquist, Ylem by Galadriel Mattei and EM showing clothes, Noel Hagman' shoes, Micha Designs, Veronica Ures and Lisa Soltis showing jewelry and Laura Kranitz showing headpieces.
The fashion show began with Linda Loudermilk's sustainable and surreal designs accompanied by the tunes of DJ Gabriel Diggs. As we sipped Veev Acai Spirit cocktails or Honest Tea, Loudermilk's designs took over the crowd. Piece after piece would have drawn attention in a traditional fashion show. To have these delightful and very wearable styles made from all manner of recycled materials was a phenomenal cudo for the fashion industry. After all, average clothing textiles require very toxic processes for their production. This collection shatters that business model. Loudermilk featured a mid-calve length dress or coat made of black trash bags and looking like the coolest leather trench out. The large crowd broke into spontaneous applause as outfit after outfit showcased designers at the top of their game. I believe that this collection absolutely establishes relative newcomer, eco-fashion as major contender in the high fashion world .
The environmental fact that these clothes are part of a cycle of reuse makes me feel like I am at least a small part of the solution when I wear these clothes. These designers are reusing materials that are a well known ingredient in U.S. landfills. As business people, these designers are not only farsighted but actively promoting the greater good. For our part, when we purchase these eco styles, we are being conscious consumers, that is, using our dollars responsibly and promoting positive change. Plus, its nice to know that we're doing good while we're looking great, i.e. it's good to be green.
