World Water Day, celebrated annually on March 22, was established by the United Nations in 1992 and focuses attention on the world's water crisis, as well as the solutions to address it. It is estimated that almost a billion people do not have access to clean drinking water across the world.
Charity: water, founded by Scott Harrison, is a non-profit organization which brings clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Several donors and partners provide gifts in kind to this organization which allows 100% of public donations to directly fund water projects.
Today charity: water launched Unshaken, their fundraising campaign to help Haiti recover from the earthquake by providing people with access to clean, safe drinking water. Their goal is to raise $1.3+ million to fund 11 large-scale water projects which will serve more than 40,000 people in need. Go to www.charitywater.org/unshaken for more information. 100% of donations directly fund water projects in 11 areas in Haiti.
There are various ways to get involved in helping charity: water, including making donations on their website as well as starting your own fundraising campaign for a well. You can also buy gifts for your friends that bring clean water to people in need. The Little Black Box for $24 gives clean water to one person in a developing nation for 20 years. This gift includes a charity: water bracelet which is a reminder of the person your gift will help. Other merchandise includes t-shirts, hoodies and sustainable Thermos Hydration bottles.
If you’re feeling very generous you can Sponsor a Well. A freshwater project can provide an entire community with clean, safe drinking water for 20 years. If you donate on someone's behalf as a gift, they will receive a certificate from charity: water and when the well is complete in 12-18 months, you will both receive photos, GPS coordinates and information about the finished project.
