Tuesday, June 1st, the source of drinking water for over 17 million people in the Philadelphia area, the Delaware River, was announced as the most endangered waterway in the United States by the American Rivers group.
Waste water, runoff produced by gas drilling, increasing industry, and hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," (injecting millions of gallons of water mixed with chemicals to stimulate gas wells) in northern Pennsylvania and New York State, threatens to pollute the expansive underground Marcellus Shale reserve which feeds into the Delaware.
There is both local and national legislation proposed to protect with the river and other local waterways, but without solidified legislation, Pennsylvania rivers and streams remain in danger.
