Green events - San Francisco Bay Area - February 2010

When it comes to cleantech and sustainability, how can we bridge the gap between theory and practice and provide a comprehensive real-world view of the future of cleantech?

1.       A presentation and a panel discussion on “Value Creation from Sustainability Best Practices” is hosted by the Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV) Green Team Leaders and EMC.

Page Mill Consultants and Kanal Consulting will present their findings on the sustainability best practices among 25 leading corporations (14 are Bay Area companies). Learn how these companies are benefiting from their sustainability initiatives, including:
· Major value drivers for sustainability initiatives & how to structure projects for success
· Performance management: strategically driving the direction of sustainability initiatives & results with balanced-scorecard metrics

2.       U.S.-Japan Clean Tech Symposium 2010 in San Francisco - “Why Being in Japan and Partnering with Japanese Companies are Essential for Clean Tech

The U.S.-Japan Symposium will highlight clean tech opportunities and encourage collaboration between U.S. and Japanese companies through discussion and sharing of strategies and plans (e.g. investment in U.S. and Japan; innovation opportunities for U.S. and Japanese companies; entry into third-country markets by U.S. and Japan collaboration).

Organized by the U.S. Department of State, METI (Japan's Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry), and JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization), the event will hold several panel discussions:

Panel Discussion 1: Cleantech in Japan - Current developments in marketable clean technologies in Japan and what Japanese companies are looking for when working with U.S. companies. Also, U.S. journalists will discuss the latest technologies and trends in Japan.

Panel Discussion 2: U.S. Clentech - Views on the Japanese market and overseas market development by U.S. clean tech companies.

There will be a networking reception after the sessions.

 3.      UC Berkeley Cleantech Institute - "Commercialization of clean technologies"

The event is designed to advance commercialization of clean technologies by converging a dialogue between the key triad: Economics, Innovation and Policy; facilitating knowledge building and action taking to make the system work better; and creating a network that continues “action learning”. Participants will gain the networks and know-how necessary to catalyze the industry into achieving its potential.

Day 1 - Policy & Innovation
The Policy & Innovation segment is designed to explain how to design and execute technology from concept to commercialization within the context of the political and regulatory environment. Day 1 will cover the current policy and its potential impact, real world examples and candid accounts from executives who are navigating the regulatory process, and the strategic map of the federal, state, and local initiatives.

Day 2 - Innovation & Economics
The Innovation & Economics segment explores the final stages along the path to commercialization and beyond, including partnerships, financing, exit strategies and more. Day 2 will examine proven business models through case studies and provide a view from cleantech investors.

The Cleantech Institute event advisory board represents a cross-section of the private and public sectors and includes industry executives, policy makers and scientists.

 4.      "Designing a Path to Sustainable Development" is co-sponsored by the Woods Institute for the Environment and the Department of Economics at Stanford University.

The featured speaker is Jeffrey Sachs, the Director of The Earth Institute, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University. He is also Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. From 2002 to 2006, he was Director of the UN Millennium Project and Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the Millennium Development Goals, the internationally agreed goals to reduce extreme poverty, disease, and hunger by the year 2015. Sachs is also President and Co-Founder of Millennium Promise Alliance, a nonprofit organization aimed at ending extreme global poverty.

 5.       “Our Energy Future - The Search for Solutions” – presented by Richard Sassoon, Managing Director of the Stanford University Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP).

As we become more aware of the consequences of the way we use energy to the
environment and to our economy, we recognize the need to bring together policy makers, industry and academia to find doable solutions and address behavior changes.

Dr. Sassoon will review approaches that can be taken in the coming decades to address concerns about the consequences of the way we use energy to the environment and to our economy and will overview Stanford's research towards developing solutions to our energy challenges.
