Preview: 2009 Chevy Silverado Hybrid truck treads lightly on gas use

The Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid is the only only full-size hybrid pickup on the market.  Thanks to its hybrid soul, it delivers fuel economy compable to many midsize sedans, but with the cargo and towing capability expected from a full-size truck.

Chevy claims the Silverado Hybrid gets 40-percent better fuel economy in city driving and 25-percent overall increase in fuel economy over its full-gas sibling.

For 2009, prices starts at $38,995  for 2WD models.  But this price does not reflect a $2,200 federal tax credit.   that applies to many customers who purchase the Silverado Hybrid. All models come with an eight-year/100,000-mile hybrid component warranty.

The Silverado Hybrid uses GM's patented two-mode hybrid system -- also in the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid -- and a powerful 6.0-liter gas V-8.  The truck can drive up to 30 mph in all-electric mode before switching to the gas engine, even when the truck is fully loaded or towing a trailer. It can haul up to 6,100-pounds.

EPA-estimated fuel economy for 2WD models is 21 mpg city and 22  highway.  4WD models are estimated at 20 mpg city and highway driving. That mileage, combined with a 26-gallon (98 L) fuel tank, delivers a cruising range of more than 500 miles with 2WD models and more than 470 miles with 4WD models.

Creature features include an easy-lift  tailgate and lock, automatic climate control, steering wheel audio controls and Bluetooth phone capability.  The Silverado Hybrid also comes with standard head curtain side airbags, unusual in a pick-up truck, and a soft tonneau cover.

The Chevy Malibu is NOT a two-stage hybrid, but is a mild hybrid with batteries that improve mileage by only a couple of miles over the standard 4cyl. Malibu. However, the price premium for a hybrid Malibu is the lowest in the industry. The 2010 Malibu Hybrid will have stronger lithium ion batteries and improved mileage over the 2009. I'm looking forward to driving the hybrid Silverado.

I want to give the new Silverado a try. Being able to get better mileage and still be able to tow is a big plus. Of course the hybrid logo has to go. I wouldn't want to be considered a smug greenie.
