There are five finalists for the annual Green Car of the Year.  The winner is announced during the press  preview days of the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show.  This year's nominees are three hybrids and two clean diesel cars.

In alphabetical order:

  • Audi A3 TDI
  • Honda Insight
  • Mercury Milan Hybrid
  • Toyota Prius
  • Volkswagen Golf TDI

The announcement is being made on Thursday, December 3rd.  Last year, I was sitting at a table with top Honda and Acura executives when the Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel cell car was named as 2008 Green Car of the Year.  Honda has a good chance of winning again, since the 2010 Honda Insight is another brilliant fuel efficient design.

I'm glad I'm not a judge -- these are all excellent green car choices.  The winner is ultimately decided by jurors who know a thing or two about cars, or the environment, or both.  This year's judges include --

  • NBC's Jay Leno, an avid vintage car collector
  • Jean-Michel Cousteau, the environmentalist
  • Carroll Shelby, who has designed a car or two
  • Matt Peterson of Global Green USA
  • Carl Pope, execcutive director of the environmental group Sierra Club
  • editors of the Green Car Journal, which sponsors the award

BTW -- I'm attending the 2009 Los Angeles Show and reporting on all the great new green cars being introduced and shown at this important car show.

How can anything with a tailpipe be considered green? Regardless of mpg, toxic gases are still emitted. Not to mention the fact that approximately only 15% of the energy from combustion moves the vehicle -- an efficiency number that is hardly green.
